Mu opioid receptor (MOR) has been shown to be associated with alcoholism and dependence. The present study examined the involvement of a polymorphism in A118G exon 1 C1031G intron 2 MOR gene 200 Chinese heroin-dependent 97 control subjects. Results showed significant association for both polymorphisms G allele is more common group (39.5% 30.8% polymorphisms, respectively) when compared controls (29.4% 21.1% respectively). This suggests that variant may contribute vulnerability heroin

Abstract Methamphetamine (METH) is a monoaminergic toxin that destroys dopamine terminals and causes astrogliosis in vivo . Oxidative stress has been shown to play an important role the toxic effects of METH. In present study, we sought determine whether astrocytes are involved METH‐induced oxidative stress. Reactive oxygen species (ROS), ATP, change mitochondria membrane potential (ΔΨm) were examined cultured striatal, mesencephalic, cortical after 4 48 h mM METH treatment. Results showed...

GABAA receptor subunit genes clustered on 5q33 play a role in the development of alcoholism and methamphetamine use disorder without psychosis. The present study explored possible contribution same to heroin dependence. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) subunits GABRB2, GABRA6, GABRA1, GABRG2 were examined 178 male Han Chinese heroin-dependent 170 control subjects. A significant difference allele frequency for SNP rs211014 GABAAgamma2 gene between cases controls was identified (P =...

Abstract Introduction and Aims. The number of illicit drug users incarcerated in Sri Lanka has been growing over the last decade. This paper presents drug‐use characteristics risk‐taking behaviours among a group male users. Design Methods. An interviewer‐administered structured questionnaire was completed by 278 three prisons Lanka. Results. majority (81.3%) interviewees were aged 25–45 years. Most them had received low levels education, experienced childhood delinquency deprived upbringing....

Abstract Alterations in cellular membrane structure and the subsequent failure of its function after CNS ischemia were monitored by analyzing changes plasma marker enzyme (Na + K ‐ATPase. The levels two isozymes Na )‐ATPase, α α, which have distinct anatomical distributions, studied to determine if differential damage occurs primary peri‐ischemic injury areas. efficacy monosialoganglioside (GM1) treatment was assessed, since this glycosphingolipid has been shown reduce ischemic protecting...

Heroin users exhibit abnormal pain sensitivity called opioid‐induced hyperalgesia that may weaken their determination to abstain. The dopamine receptor D4 gene ( DRD4 ) is associated with heroin dependence; one of its polymorphisms a C/T variation 521 bp upstream the (−521C/T). We investigated whether this polymorphism was related opioid dependence through modulation cold‐pain responses. recruited 84 heroin‐dependent Chinese male subjects and 168 healthy controls. Genotyping performed by...

Abstract Male and female human subjects show contrasting propensities to misuse drugs of addiction, including alcohol. These differences lead different psychological neurological consequences, such as the likelihood developing dependence. The pattern extent brain damage in alcohol‐use disorder cases also varies with comorbid disease. To explore mechanisms that might underlie these outcomes, we used autopsy tissue determine mRNA transcript expression relation genotype for two GABA A receptor...

ABSTRACT: Methamphetamine (METH) has long‐lasting neurotoxic effects on the dopamine and forebrain serotonin systems. It was reported that METH would induce release of glutamate within striatum it also caused astrogliosis. The mechanisms this subsequent neurotoxicity are not well defined. aim study to examine response cultured astrocytes after METH‐induced injury. Astrocytes were from neonatal C57B1/6 mice brains. Cells obtained mesencephalon, cortex in order any regional differences....

Dopamine D 1 and 2 receptor protein expression was examined by Western blotting in newborn infants dying from cerebral asphyxia between 31 42 weeks' gestation, matched controls. Frontal, occipital, temporal, motor cortex tissue samples were obtained at autopsy (median postmortem interval 35 hours) frozen for storage —80 ° C. A total of immunoreactive bands detected with each primary antibody infant brain, whereas a single band present adult human rat tissue. Immunoreactivity varied cortical...
