A demonstration of abstinence and controlled drinking in 4 alcoholics indicates that excessive can be moderated by reinforcement contingencies. Ss could earn money each time they abstained or stopped after a priming dose for one day. The magnitude required maintaining moderation was function the alcohol delay reinforcement. This result suggests might maintained if reinforcers dispensed to alcoholic were made contingent on moderate drinking.
Healthy chronic alcoholics were hospitalized and given access to substantial quantities of ethanol in an effort limit their drinking by the application contingency-management procedures. Two experiments designed determine conditions under which moderate could be maintained for 5 days succession. The reinforcer moderation was participation enriched environment. Excessive resulted subject's withdrawal from this first experiment demonstrated that strategy. question arose then whether during...
Sense of humor is potentially relevant to social functioning in dementias, but has been little studied these diseases. We designed a semi-structured informant questionnaire assess behavior and preferences patients with behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD; n = 15), semantic (SD; 7), progressive nonfluent aphasia (PNFA; 10), Alzheimer’s disease (AD; 16) versus healthy age-matched individuals (n 21). Altered (including frankly inappropriate) responses were significantly more...
Despite much recent interest in music and dementia, perception has not been widely studied across dementia syndromes using an information processing approach. Here we addressed this issue a cohort of 30 patients representing major typical Alzheimer's disease (AD, n = 16), logopenic aphasia (LPA, Alzheimer variant syndrome; 5), progressive nonfluent (PNFA; 9) relation to 19 healthy age-matched individuals. We designed novel neuropsychological battery assess musical patterns the dimensions...
Frontotemporal dementia is an important neurodegenerative disorder of younger life led by profound emotional and social dysfunction. Here we used fMRI to assess brain mechanisms music emotion processing in a cohort patients with frontotemporal ( n = 15) relation healthy age‐matched individuals 11). In passive‐listening paradigm, manipulated levels simple arpeggio chords (mode versus dissonance) modality (music human vocalizations). A complex profile disease‐associated functional alterations...
Abstract art may signal emotions independently of a biological or social carrier: it might therefore constitute test case for defining brain mechanisms generic emotion decoding and the impact disease states on those mechanisms. This is potentially particular relevance to diseases in frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) spectrum. These are often led by emotional impairment despite retained enhanced artistic interest at least some patients. However, processing from has not been studied...
Aberrant rule- and reward-based processes underpin abnormalities of socio-emotional behaviour in major dementias. However, these remain poorly characterized. Here we used music to probe rule decoding reward valuation patients with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) syndromes Alzheimer's disease (AD) relative healthy age-matched individuals. We created short melodies that were either harmonically resolved ('finished') or unresolved ('unfinished'); the task was classify each melody as finished...
Chronic alcoholics were given the opportunity to drink up 24 oz. of 95 proof alcohol every day for 17 20 days. If they drank 5 or less remained in enriched environment, and if exceeded this limit, an impoverished environment. The results indicate that moderate drinking by chronic is possible, when continuous heavy a possible alternative behavior. These data provide further support as feasible therapeutic goal alcoholics.
Paintings could offer insight into the varied experiences of people with different dementias. In this project, a single exercise - painting group objects in still-life was used to capture artistic production four artists diagnoses dementia and healthy artists. Whilst quantitative studies provide important insights neuroanatomical supports for actions, autonomous art exercises may yield deeper understanding individual creative experience context neurodegenerative disease.
Violence risk assessment and management is at the forefront of work mental health professionals in forensic settings. Staff working these settings are presented with many challenges. This review explores how experience violence process. A systematic mixed studies utilizing PRISMA guidelines was conducted. Sixteen were identified for inclusion. Data from qualitative, quantitative, mixed-methods analyzed together using a data-based convergent synthesis design. Using best-fit framework...
Summary Sixteen female smokers participated in a study of ‘safer cigarettes’ and bought their cigarettes from the experimenters at less than prevailing prices. Half received an economic incentive for purchasing delivering progressively tar nicotine: other half paid same price regardless brand purchased. Subjects were not required to change brands. Twelve sixteen subjects completed twelve‐week study. Significant reductions nicotine intake, which persisted more six months beyond period,...
Group fines were used to control the alcohol-related misbehavior of skid row alcoholics living and working in a hospital token-economy ward. When only individual was fined there high incidence unauthorized drinking elopement. Institution group wherein offender an equivalent fine levied against all other Ss led decrease serious offenses one-fifth previous incidence. appeared be effective method mobilizing social pressure for this population.
Music is a universal stimulus that generates powerful emotion and reward. Responses to music depend on internalised ‘rules’ generate strong psychological expectancies have been little studied in disease. We assessed expectations generated while listening associated affective responses cohorts of patients with Alzheimer9s disease (AD) frontotemporal lobar degeneration (behavioural variant dementia (bvFTD), semantic (SD) progressive nonfluent aphasia (PNFA) relation healthy older individuals....
The purpose of this commentary is to highlight the challenges encountered when conducting research with young offenders. This drawn from first-hand experience 3 researchers working on separate projects within environment. Young offenders present as a complex clinical population high levels illiteracy, substance abuse, and mental health issues. Significant planning therefore required before group. Consideration must be given heterogeneity prison populations alongside potential limitations...
Music is a universal stimulus that generates powerful emotion and reward in listeners. Responses to music depend on internalised musical 'rules' generate strong psychological expectancies even musically untrained individuals. accesses brain mechanisms of emotion, rule encoding analogous those required for social relations targeted by dementia diseases. However, these aspects processing have been little studied neurodegenerative disease. Here we assessed cognitive expectations generated while...
