A demonstration of abstinence and controlled drinking in 4 alcoholics indicates that excessive can be moderated by reinforcement contingencies. Ss could earn money each time they abstained or stopped after a priming dose for one day. The magnitude required maintaining moderation was function the alcohol delay reinforcement. This result suggests might maintained if reinforcers dispensed to alcoholic were made contingent on moderate drinking.

Sense of humor is potentially relevant to social functioning in dementias, but has been little studied these diseases. We designed a semi-structured informant questionnaire assess behavior and preferences patients with behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD; n = 15), semantic (SD; 7), progressive nonfluent aphasia (PNFA; 10), Alzheimer’s disease (AD; 16) versus healthy age-matched individuals (n 21). Altered (including frankly inappropriate) responses were significantly more...

Despite much recent interest in music and dementia, perception has not been widely studied across dementia syndromes using an information processing approach. Here we addressed this issue a cohort of 30 patients representing major typical Alzheimer's disease (AD, n = 16), logopenic aphasia (LPA, Alzheimer variant syndrome; 5), progressive nonfluent (PNFA; 9) relation to 19 healthy age-matched individuals. We designed novel neuropsychological battery assess musical patterns the dimensions...

Frontotemporal dementia is an important neurodegenerative disorder of younger life led by profound emotional and social dysfunction. Here we used fMRI to assess brain mechanisms music emotion processing in a cohort patients with frontotemporal ( n = 15) relation healthy age‐matched individuals 11). In passive‐listening paradigm, manipulated levels simple arpeggio chords (mode versus dissonance) modality (music human vocalizations). A complex profile disease‐associated functional alterations...

Abstract art may signal emotions independently of a biological or social carrier: it might therefore constitute test case for defining brain mechanisms generic emotion decoding and the impact disease states on those mechanisms. This is potentially particular relevance to diseases in frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) spectrum. These are often led by emotional impairment despite retained enhanced artistic interest at least some patients. However, processing from has not been studied...

Aberrant rule- and reward-based processes underpin abnormalities of socio-emotional behaviour in major dementias. However, these remain poorly characterized. Here we used music to probe rule decoding reward valuation patients with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) syndromes Alzheimer's disease (AD) relative healthy age-matched individuals. We created short melodies that were either harmonically resolved ('finished') or unresolved ('unfinished'); the task was classify each melody as finished...

Chronic alcoholics were given the opportunity to drink up 24 oz. of 95 proof alcohol every day for 17 20 days. If they drank 5 or less remained in enriched environment, and if exceeded this limit, an impoverished environment. The results indicate that moderate drinking by chronic is possible, when continuous heavy a possible alternative behavior. These data provide further support as feasible therapeutic goal alcoholics.
