In addition to the oceanographic data available for South China Sea (SCS) from World Ocean Database (WOD) and Array Real-time Geostrophic Oceanography (Argo) floats, a suite of observations has been made by Institute Oceanology (SCSIO) starting 1970s. Here, we assemble SCS Physical Oceanographic Dataset (SCSPOD14) based on 51,392 validated temperature salinity profiles collected these three datasets period 1919-2014. A gridded dataset climatological monthly mean temperature, salinity, mixed...
Abstract The properties and heat budget of marine waves (MHWs) on the northern South China Sea (SCS) continental shelf are investigated. MHWs with warming amplitudes above 1.5°C occur mainly along coast, their temperature anomaly decreases toward open sea. 1°–1.5°C duration < 20 days dominate SCS shelf. A analysis indicates that main source is sea surface net flux. Oceanic processes dominated by advection mean anomalous horizontal velocity (advha). contribution advha always cools upper...
Abstract Newly available sea surface salinity (SSS) data from the Aquarius together with in situ hydrographic are used to explore spatial and temporal characteristics of SSS South China Sea (SCS). Using observations as reference, an evaluation daily indicates that there exists a negative bias 0.45 psu for version 3.0 set. The root‐mean‐square difference is about 0.53 after correcting systematic bias, those weekly monthly SSSs 0.29 psu, respectively. Nevertheless, shows reliable freshening...
Abstract Air–sea interaction in the South China Sea (SCS) has direct impacts on weather and climate of its surrounding areas at various spatiotemporal scales. In situ observation plays a vital role exploring dynamic characteristics regional circulation air–sea interaction. Remote sensing modeling are expected to provide high-resolution data for studies coupling; however, careful validation calibration using observations is necessary ensure quality these data. Through decade effort, marine...
Abstract Salinification has occurred in the South China Sea from late 2012 to present, as shown by satellite Aquarius/Soil Moisture Active Passive data and Argo float data. This salinification follows a 20 year freshening trend that started 1993. The signal is strongest near surface extends downward under seasonal thermocline depth of 150 m. occurs when phase Pacific Decadal Oscillation switches negative positive. Diagnosis salinity budget suggests an increasing net freshwater loss...
Using a variety of in situ sea surface temperature (SST) data sets the South China Sea, we validate satellite-derived SST from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). Analysis large number match-up samples during 2008–2012 shows that MODIS SSTs have biases ranging –0.19°C to –0.34°C and standard deviation (STD) errors 0.58°C 0.68°C. Specifically, mean are all negative but there smaller cool daytime than those night-time. The monthly validation analysis exhibit apparent...
Abstract Observations suggest that subsurface waters in the northern South China Sea exhibited substantial low‐frequency variability, with a striking decadal change southern limit of 34.6 practical salinity unit (psu) isohaline. Long‐term freshening waters, started 1960, was followed by salinification from 1975, and occurred again 1993 to 2012. The linear trends were −0.0076, 0.0100, −0.0078 psu/yr, respectively. An analysis budget reveals main underlying contributors are horizontal...
Abstract To better understand eddy‐induced heat and salt transport, a targeted joint hydrographic investigation focusing on an anticyclonic eddy was carried out in July 2017 the northern South China Sea. In situ satellite observations together with Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) output show transport of subsurface saline Kuroshio water into Sea by eddy. Subsurface high‐salinity cores are consistent centers. The occurs two stages accompanied shedding. First, is trapped within at its...
Abstract In situ data suggest that there is a subsurface speed maximum between 70 and 120 m in the Kuroshio, which first revealed by directly velocity observation. The can also be advected into largest marginal sea tropics, is, South China Sea (SCS). As it enters SCS, its depth shoals to 40 then finally disappears western northern SCS. Strong intrusion results strong baroclinic instability, triggers vigorous conversion, consequently active mesoscale eddy variability vice versa. Our study...
Abstract Analyzing the observed currents at Xisha (110.3899°E, 17.1038°N) during May 2009 to 2010, it is found that kinetic energy has significant mesoscale variability, and each peak responds large positive/negative ocean surface current curl caused by eddies. Compared with wind stress work pressure work, also barotropic which mainly contributed sea height (SSH) corresponding eddies behaves like energy. The contribution of can be up 90% sometimes reach deep level every time. Using satellite...
Fabrication of superior nonprecious electrocatalysts is essential for water electrolysis. Herein, the epitaxial growth XMoO4 (X = Ni, Co, Fe) nanosheets on hexagonal MoO2 nanoplates are carried out. The preoxidation nanoplate fatal to a array nanoplates. hierarchical heterostructure vertically aligned NiMo (NiMo/MoO2) well-maintained in process situ topotactic reduction transformation from NiMoO4·xH2O/MoO2. Attributing it rich electroactive sites array, together with intrinsic...
Highly substituted tetrahydroimidazopyrimidine derivatives with three chiral centers have been synthesized for the first time using an organocatalytic asymmetric domino aza-Michael-Mannich reaction of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes and N-arylidene-1H-imidazol-2-amines. This efficient approach furnishes products in good yields (42-87%) excellent stereoselectivities (>20:1 dr, up to >99% ee).
