This study examines blood mercury (Hg) concentrations in Calonectris sp. shearwaters from three colonies along the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts of Iberian Peninsula (southwestern Europe), investigating their relationship with foraging ecology through GPS tracking stable isotopes (δ15N δ13C) data during breeding season. Hg levels exhibited a spatial gradient, increasing Ocean (1.8 ± 0.4 μg g-1 dw) towards Sea, Columbretes Islands (NW Mediterranean) showing highest (6.5 2.1 dw)....
The diets of marine predators are a potential source information about range shifts in their prey. For example, the short-finned squid Illex argentinus , commercially fished species on Patagonian Shelf South Atlantic, has been reported diet grey-headed, Thalassarche chrysostoma ; black-browed, T. melanophris and wandering, Diomedea exulans albatrosses breeding at Bird Island, Georgia (54°S 28°W) Southern Ocean. Tracking data suggest that these birds may feed I. while foraging Ocean waters...
Abstract International Polar Week is an educational activity that has been carried out since the Year 2007–2008 (known then as Days). This event, which brings together educators and polar scientists to promote science, generally organised by Association of Early Career Scientists Educators International. Here we provide overview how started, describe its implementation in Portugal, a “non-polar” country. We quantify activities during Weeks Portugal between 2012 2017, involved >96,000...
Abstract The relevance of education and outreach (E&O) activities about the Antarctic Treaty has been recognized at Consultative Meetings (ATCM) Committee for Environmental Protection (CEP). This study examines key topics target audiences detailed in papers submitted to ATCM on E&O. Since entered into force 1961, a total 216 E&O have produced. number increased substantially since mid-1990s. ‘Science’ (76.9%) ‘Wildlife/Biodiversity/Environment’ (75.5%) were most addressed these...
