CORD is a new design of telco central office that replaces closed and proprietary hardware with software running on commodity servers, switches, access devices. It allows network operators to benefit from both the economies scale (infrastructure constructed few building blocks) agility (the ability rapidly deploy elastically services) cloud providers enjoy today. This article introduces architecture describes an open reference implementation available for evaluation.
IP and Transport networks are controlled operated independently today, leading to significant Capex Opex inefficiencies for the providers. We discuss a unified approach with OpenFlow, present recent demonstration of control plane OpenFlow enabled IP/Ethernet TDM switched networks.
