The work of Sheppard et al. (Ecol. Lett., 21, 2018, 1395) relies on the strong assumption that isotopic niche is equal to trophic niche. Here I raise three main concerns showing classic hypotheses built upon cannot be directly interpreted in space. Future studies should always keep and niches distinct.
Recent advances in molecular biomonitoring open new horizons for aquatic ecosystem assessment. Rapid and cost-effective methods based on organismal DNA or environmental (eDNA) now offer the opportunity to produce inventories of indicator taxa that can subsequently be used assess biodiversity ecological quality. However, integration these DNA-based into current monitoring practices is not straightforward, will require coordinated actions coming years at national international levels. To plan...
RATIONALE Dorsal white muscle is the standard tissue analysed in fish trophic studies using stable isotope analyses. However, sampling often implies sacrifice of fish. Thus, we examined whether non‐lethal fin can substitute food web studies. METHODS Analysing and δ 15 N 13 C values 466 European freshwater (14 species) with an elemental analyser coupled ratio mass spectrometer, compared two tissues. Correlations between ratios were for all together specifically 12 species. We further proposed...
Burrowing benthic organisms promote water and solute fluxes across the sediment–water interface. Water solutes penetrate burrow walls are transported into/out of sediment when flush their burrows with overlying water. Few studies have been done to investigate bioirrigation under shifting environmental conditions. We experimentally quantified by Chironomus plumosus larvae in laboratory at 3 ranges O2 saturation (low, medium, high concentrations), 2 temperatures (10 20°C), over different...
Abstract Background This study aims to describe and test a tiered approach for assessing compliance Environmental Quality standards (EQSs) priority substances in biota line with the European Water Framework Directive. is based on caged gammarids trophic magnification factors (TMFs) at first tier, fish analyzed second tier sites predicted exceed EQS tier. A dataset was implemented by monitoring perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) exposed 15 French rivers, muscle rest-of-body from same sites....
