Miniaturization of analytical instrumentation is paramount to enabling convenient in-field sensing. The recent thrust in potentiostat miniaturization for electrochemical sensing and general use has led the development commercial application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) that pack all power a benchtop instrument into one 5 mm × chip. While capabilities these far exceed those open-source potentiostats literature, activation barrier their implementation requires extensive electrical...
Abstract We developed a deep fusion methodology of nondestructive in-situ thermal and ex-situ ultrasonic images for porosity detection in laser-based additive manufacturing (LBAM). A core challenge with the LBAM is lack between successive layers printed metal. Ultrasonic imaging can capture structural abnormalities by passing waves through layers. Alternatively, track history during fabrication. The proposed sensor U-Net fills gap fusing employing two-branch convolutional neural network...
Abstract Reported is an electrical transduction platform for real‐time wireless anion sensing using single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) noncovalently functionalized with squaramide‐based binding selectors. Systematically studied are anion‐binding properties and efficiency of the SWCNT composites selectors two similar electron‐withdrawing groups, 3,5‐bis(trifluoromethyl)benzyl ( 1 ) 3,5‐bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl 2 ), which induce hydrogen‐bonding interaction anions deprotonation a...
Electrochemical measurements over an array of electrodes may be accomplished with one three potentiostat architectures: a single-channel device which averages the signal from number interconnected electrodes, multichannel dedicated circuits for each electrode, or multiplexer interface to isolate specific electrodes. Of these architectures, use is best suited facilitate individual without need large numbers channels. We present versatile strategy development flexible printed circuit (FPC)...
The ubiquitous Faraday cage, an experimental component particularly essential for nanoelectrochemical measurements, is responsible neutralizing noise introduced by electromagnetic interference (EMI). cage designs abound in the literature, often exhibiting varying thicknesses, mesh sizes, and base materials. fact that composition most goes unreported underscores many electrochemical researchers assume a 100% EMI reduction any given design. In this work, assumption challenged from theoretical...
Coatings prepared from titania-thiol-ene compositions were found to be both self-cleaning, as measured by changes in water contact angle, and photocatalytic toward the degradation of an organic dye. Stable dispersions at approximately 2 wt % solids using a combination high-shear mixing sonication acetone solvent titania, trisilanol isobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) dispersant, select thiol-ene monomers, i.e., trimethylolpropane tris(3-mercaptopropionate) (TMPMP),...
The purpose of this research is to investigate the use a communication network utilizing Long Range (LoRa) low-power wide-area protocol for telemetry detected target chemicals. sensor platform under development allows traditional electrochemical techniques be executed with low Size, Weight, and Power (low SWaP) system that deployable using an autonomous or remote-controlled vehicle. Once in field, sensors communicate chemical concentrations centralized gateway through LoRa Internet Things...
As extreme events increase in frequency, flow-disrupting large-scale structures become ever more susceptible to collapse due local scour effects. The objective of this study was validate the functionality passive, flow-excited sensors that can continue operate during an event. sensors, or piezo-rods, feature continuous piezoelectric polymer strips embedded within and along length slender cylindrical rods, which could then be driven into soil where is expected. When erodes away foundation...
Trace analysis of heavy metals in complex, environmentally relevant matrices remains a significant challenge for electrochemical sensors employing stripping voltammetry-based detection schemes. We present an alternative method capable selectively preconcentrating Cu2+ ions at the electrode surface using chelating polymer-wrapped multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). An sensor consisting poly-4-vinyl pyridine (P4VP)-wrapped MWCNTs anchored to poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)-modified gold...
The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) owns, maintains and operates several hundred locks dams across the United States. A large portion these structures have met or exceeded their design life, therefore need to perform detailed inspections regularly has become increasingly important. Some challenges for inspection personnel are hazardous conditions associated with entering dam outlet works, conduct within a short time frame so that can resume normal operations maintain downstream water...
Inland navigation infrastructure is critical to local and global economies, unplanned or extended down time for maintenance repairs can have significant social economic consequences. The extensive collection of related maintained by the US Army Corps Engineers (USACE) in a state degraded performance, with some components presently being used well beyond their design life. To provide data-driven decision-support operation, maintenance, repair/replacement these components, Engineer Research...
The United States of America has an estimate 84,000 dams which approximately 15,500 are rated as high-risk 2016. Recurrent geological and structural health changes require dam assets to be subject continuous monitoring, assessment restoration. objective the developed system is targeted at evaluating feasibility for standardization in remote, digital inspections outflow works such replace human visual inspections. This work proposes both a mobile inspection platform image processing pipeline...
This study proposes an algorithm that fuses visual cues of intensity and texture in Markov random fields region growing image segmentation. The idea is to segment the a way takes EdgeFlow edges into consideration, which provides single framework for identifying objects boundaries based on descriptors. achieved by modifying energy minimisation process, so it would penalise merging regions have boundary between them. Experimental results confirm hypothesis integration edge information...
Deep learning is becoming ubiquitous; it the underlying and driving force behind many heavily embedded technologies in society (e.g., search engines, fraud detection warning systems, social-media facial recognition algorithms). Over past few years there has been a steady increase number of audio related applications deep learning. Recently, Nykaza et al. presented pedagogical approach to understanding how hidden layers recreate, separate, classify environmental noise signals. That work some...
Underwater wireless telemetry using electromagnetic waves is a viable solution in cases where other communication techniques are not practical. This paper shows design of highly flexible software defined radio system capable various modulation and protocols for development custom underwater communication.
Abstract Local scour is a growing cause of bridge failure in the United States and around world. In next century, effects climate changes will make more bridges susceptible to than ever before. This study aims harness spatially continuous monitoring capabilities ultrasonic time-domain reflectometry detect soil interface for purposes monitoring. this study, long, slender plate coupled with two flexible piezoelectric devices that propagate Lamb waves along length form sensor. <title>Abstract</title> Machinery health monitoring techniques provide valuable insights into the performance and condition of machines. Acoustic sensor-based has emerged as a significant area interest for industry due to its ability accurately capture fault signatures, thereby improving detection accuracies anomalies or deviations from regular operations. However, collected sensor signals typically contain complex mixture sounds that relate multiple conditions, environmental noise, other...
<title>ABSTRACT</title> <p>Robotic platforms require accurate geo-spatial localization for high-level mission planning, real-time site reconnaissance, and multi-machine collaboration. Global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers are most commonly used to provide UGVs with geolocation. However, GNSS is not reliable in contested environments because it vulnerable jamming, spoofing black-outs. To address these issues, the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE)...
