Summary The role of generalist predators in pest control has been neglected because generalists are not able to track populations. Generalist suggested be important spring before specialist become active. Here, we show that some even during winter, when the majority arthropod pests and their enemies dormant. We quantified winter‐active on suppression pear psylla winter using a discrete nonlinear model an intraguild predation system. To parameterize our model, conducted series experiments (i)...
Spiders are a highly diversified group of arthropods and play an important role in terrestrial ecosystems as ubiquitous predators, which makes them suitable to test variety eco-evolutionary hypotheses. For this purpose, knowledge diverse range species traits is required. Until now, data on spider have been scattered across thousands publications produced for over two centuries written languages. To facilitate access such data, we developed online database archiving accessing at global scale....
The evolutionary processes that shape host-parasitoid coexistence in a changing environment are poorly understood. We examined the large-scale distribution of highly specialised polysphinctine Darwin wasps associated with spiders along an elevational gradient and tested hypothesis parasitism rates depend on elevation, habitat type species age composition host community. Further, basis dataset, we three-dimensional webs may be adaptation against parasitoids. found significant variation...
Abstract The composition of spider communities in forests is affected by habitat characteristics, such as canopy openness, vegetation cover or tree species diversity; therefore, we assume that the effect will differ among species. As research European beech has not been conducted, studied understory environmental characteristics associated with a gradient overstory openness forest on ground‐dwelling richness, abundance and guild Western Carpathians, Slovakia. Canopy litter, litter thickness...
ABSTRACT The authors have prepared a detailed map of Slovakia's ecosystems, which identifies individual ecosystems and their spatial distribution, status, selected properties. impetus for the production this is need various stakeholders, especially nature protection bodies, forestry management, agricultural management public administration, better data on distribution ecosystems. methodology mostly involves using GIS analytical tools to combine datasets protection, forestry, agriculture list...
1. Phenotypic plasticity and/or genetic adaptation may allow species to live in a variable environment. It has been shown that eggs of the dark bush‐cricket, Pholidoptera griseoaptera , which experienced an insufficient warm treatment (shorter colder), had longer development time and hatched predominantly after second diapause. 2. Given broad distribution this from sea level timber line, we expected variation voltinism along climatic gradient. To reveal role natural selection egg‐hatching...
Although spiders are common inhabitants of tree cavities, factors that drive their community structure in these microhabitats little known. Here we investigated whether bark type, season, intraguild predation (IGP) among spiders, and presence vertebrate predators can influence the spider cavities. We examined abundance taxonomic functional composition nest-boxes within two mixed forest stands central Slovakia 2012–2013. In total, 1211 belonging to 31 species were sampled from 60 at sites...
The ichneumonid parasitoid Sinarachna nigricornis (Holmgren, 1860) was associated only with Araneus sturmi (Hahn, 1831) in the studied locality. normal capturing orb web of A. always vertical and had a median 18 radii 9 spirals laboratory conditions. When spiders did not build capture webs, they built resting molting webs which consisted few threads between ends provided tree twigs. There were no significant differences number radials unparasitized parasitized by early instar larvae. under...
We studied the effects of overstory canopy cover on ground-dwelling harvestmen communities in European beech forests Western Carpathian Mts.We analyzed differences species richness, abundance and composition two tree categories (closed open canopy).Overall, 1765 individuals belonging to 16 were caught using pitfall traps.Repeated-measures ANOVA revealed that under both closed canopies a similar absolute rarefi ed richness number (standardized 100 trap days) caught, affected by season (i.e.,...
The spitting spider Scytodes fusca Walckenaer, 1837 is recorded for the first time in Central Europe from both Germany and Slovakia. The species was found two localities, within Botanical Garden Bratislava (Slovakia), specifically a heated greenhouse with high humidity, "Tropical Islands", tropical holiday resort Krausnick (Germany). It seems that this Pantropical has probably been introduced here along imported plants.A description of diagnostic characters, as well figures, given.
The spatial distribution of parasitoids is closely linked to the and ecological requirements their hosts. Several studies have documented changes in fauna composition response elevation, but data on associated with spiders are missing. koinobiont ichneumonid wasp Zatypota anomala strictly specialised genus Dictyna (Dictynidae) Europe. We examined family Dictynidae forest ecotones central Europe across a broad elevation gradient (110–1466 m a.s.l.). checked for parasitism by Z. . It was most...
Abstract The authors evaluate the impact of different types forestry management, and other anthropic disturbances, on harvestmen (Opiliones) communities in sub-mountain beech stands Western Carpathians. Harvestmen were studied three main localities, consisting nine partial plots (Žiar nad Hronom - (1) control closed canopy stand; Jalná (2) stand, (3) thinning (4) 11-year old forest clearing, (5) 2-year clearing; Kováčová (6) (7) coppice, (8) 10-year (9) 3-year clearing). In total, 16 species...
This study explores the effect of nutritional composition on fitness consumers in a quadri-trophic food web. Specifically, we studied how enrichment fruit flies Drosophila melanogaster (Meigen, 1830) transfers to spider Phylloneta impressa (L. Koch) (Theridiidae) and its parasitoid wasp, Zatypota percontatoria Mueller (Ichneumonidae). We reared balanced, protein-enriched, lipid-enriched diets, observed several fitness-related traits both predator parasitoid. In spiders, did not find...
Two spider species, Clubiona pseudoneglectaWunderlich, 1994 and Paratrachelas maculatus (Thorell, 1875), have been recorded for the first time in Slovakia. One male five females of C. pseudoneglecta were collected at three sites Danube Plain. P. found parks town Galanta. Photos habitus genitalia, an overview current distribution habitat preferences are presented.
