High-protein diets are used for body weight reduction, but consequences on the large intestine ecosystem poorly known. Here, rats were fed 15 days with either a normoproteic diet (NP, 14% protein) or hyperproteic-hypoglucidic isocaloric (HP, 53% protein). Cecum and colon recovered analysis. Short- branched-chain fatty acids, as well lactate, succinate, formate, ethanol contents, markedly increased in colonic luminal contents of HP (P < 0.05 less) to lower extent cecal content. This was...

This work originally reports on the use of electrohydrodynamic processing (EHDP) to encapsulate Aloe vera (AV, barbadensis Miller) using both synthetic polymers, i.e., polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH), naturally occurring barley starch (BS), whey protein concentrate (WPC), maltodextrin. The AV leaf juice was used as water-based solvent for EHDP, resultant biopolymer solution properties were evaluated determine their effect process. Morphological analysis revealed...

We infer the swelling/de-swelling behavior of weakly ionizable poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) brushes 2-39 kDa molar mass in presence KCl concentrations from 0.1-1000 mM, pH = 3, 7, and 9, grafting densities σ 0.12-2.15 chains per nm2 using a Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Dissipation (QCM-D), confirming extending work Wu et al. to multiple chain lengths. At 7 9 (above pKa ∼ 5), brush initially swells at low ionic strength (<10 mM) "osmotic brush" regime, de-swells higher salt concentrations,...
