A checklist of earthworm species hitherto known from Kerala, a constituent the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot in India, is presented. In total, 88 and subspecies are recorded, which 55 Kerala endemics, 9 near 14 exotics 10 native peregrines. These belong to 26 genera families. The includes literature citation original description, type locality, any significant subsequent generic placements, district distributional pattern for each species/ subspecies.
Three new species of Moniligaster Perrier, 1872, namely M. bahli Narayanan & Julka, sp. nov., blakemorei nov. and keralensis are described from materials collected the Indian state Kerala. cernosvitovi Gates, 1962, horsti 1940, michaelseni 1940 stephensoni recorded for first time state. With findings, a total 10 known restricted to southern peninsular India, except ivaniosi Manazhy, 2011, decribed Andaman Islands, outside currently distributional range genus. Hence we critically reviewed...
A new megascolecid earthworm genus, Aiyeriella Narayanan & Julka gen. nov., is established from the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot of India, with two species, namely, A. quadritheca Julka, sp. and longiprostata nov. Material genus species were collected three southernmost districts Kerala state, in south-western portion peninsular India. The present can be distinguished other related Indomalayan genera by presence combined male prostatic pores paired seminal grooves on segment 18, a...
This study presents a comprehensive catalogue of the moniligastrid earthworms (Moniligastrida, Moniligastridae) world. A total 176 valid species/subspecies belonging to 5 genera are known exist in this primitive family. Drawida is speciose genus with 147 species/subspecies. Of various moniligastrids, three species considered as peregrine outside its normal Asian range. Among species, occurrence 30.68% only from type locality. It noteworthy that types 125 (71.02%) currently repositories...
We describe here a new species of terrestrial earthworm Eutyphoeus rihnimensis sp. nov. (family Acanthodrilidae) from specimens collected at Khawrihnim, village in Mizoram, Northeast India. The is distinguished its congener members E. gigas group having an outgrowth that branches into four finger-like projections the male porophores, five pairs supra-intestinal glands 8188 segments, typhlosole begins segment 25, ventral intestinal caeca 10 covers segments 33-34, bidiverticulate spermathecae...
In India, studies on above-ground biodiversity have received more attention than those below-ground biodiversity. With this view, systematic surveys for earthworms were carried out in the Western Ghats mountain range of Kerala state southwestern corner Peninsular India. This research resulted three new records state, viz. Drawida nandiensis Stephenson, 1924, D. nepalensis Michaelsen, 1907 and Celeriella bursata Jamieson, 1977. Among these, nepalensis, are recorded first time from hotspot....
Abstract This study investigates the distribution of soil centipede, Tygarrup nepalensis (Order Geophilomorpha), in moist temperate forest Northwest Himalayas, located Himri, District Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, India. Centipedes were collected using a standardized 25 × cm quadrat sampling method. We examined influence various environmental and edaphic parameters on its populations across different areas (north, northeast, southwest facing aspects). The north aspect exhibited higher density...
Among the various Indian earthworm genera, moniligastrid genus Drawida is most species rich and has undergone extensive radiation in Peninsular India. It believed that entered landmass after suturing of plate with Laurasia during Tertiary period Cenozoic Era. There are a number hypotheses about occurrence wet zone India its disjunct distribution peninsula, northeast Sri Lanka. Here this work, based on thorough analysis available literatures knowledge domains, we further discussing...
Introduction Biofloc technology (BFT) offers a sustainable approach to aquaculture by enhancing water quality and nutrient utilization. This study investigated the effects of varying carbon-to-nitrogen ratios, achieved through different combinations jaggery corn flour, rice or bran, on growth performance, body composition, histological health, immune response common carp ( Cyprinus carpio ) fingerlings in BFT system. Methods A 90-day experiment was conducted using fingerlings, where groups...
Two new species of Drawida Michaelsen, 1900, namely polydiverticulata Narayanan & Julka, sp. n. and thomasi n., are described from material collected the Indian state Kerala, which lies in Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot. elegans Rao, 1921, kanarensis Stephenson, 1917, modesta somavarpatana thurstoni Gates, 1945 recorded for first time state.
The earthworm fauna of the wetlands India is highly undocumented. We have carried out a survey earthworms in Kuttanad wetland, an integral part Vembanad-Kol Ramsar Site, India’s largest wetland international importance. Current investigation has documented 17 species belonging to 7 families. Megascolex travancorensis pentagonalis Stephenson, 1916 and Glyphidrilus fluviatilis Rao, 1922 were reported for first time since their original descriptions. Based on current study, M. t. raised rank as...
A new species Hoplochaetella darwini sp. nov. is described from the Deccan Peninsula biogeographic zone of South Indian State, Tamil Nadu. The distinguished all known by having only one pair spermathecal pores in segment 7, and a combination male prostatic 17. canonical analysis principal coordinates also supported proposed species, showing significant differences with other members genus based on taxonomical characters such as number position spermathecae prostate glands. Furthermore, an...
A new species of the genus Eutyphoeus is described herein from material collected Assam, North-eastern region India. The dhubriensis sp. nov. belongs to a group avestibulate, metandric species, with bidiverticulate spermathecae, lacking lateral intestinal caecae. proposed distinguished its congeners by shape, position genital markings and associated glands, as well number ventral caecae supra-intestinal glands.
Pontoscolex corethrurus (Müller, 1857) is an important peregrine earthworm species in the humid tropics and found land disturbed by human activities. Its presence Kerala state was first reported Michaelsen 1910.So far occurrence of 14 exotic has been from state. However present distribution status any these not yet thoroughly studied. Now P. naturalized forests, degraded areas, agroecosystems higher altitude areas to coastal zones. Here, current pattern after a period 100 years highlighted.
The occurrence of the exotic earthworm species Metaphire bahli (Gates, 1945) family Megascolecidae is recorded for first time from India.Specimens were collected Alappuzha District Kerala State. Its detailed description along with geographical distribution provided.
