We investigate the formation of ringlike deposits in drying drops DNA. In analogy with colloidal "coffee rings," DNA is transported to perimeter by capillary flow. At droplet edge, however, forms a lyotropic liquid crystal (LC) concentric chain orientations minimize LC elastic energy. During final stages drying, contact line retracts, and radial stress causes undulations at rim that propagate inward through form periodic zigzag structure. examine phenomenon terms simple model based on elasticity.

Managers of large industrial projects often measure performance by multiple attributes. For example, our paper is motivated the simulation a project called land seismic survey, in which based on duration, cost, and resource utilization. To address these types problems, we develop ranking selection procedure for making comparisons systems (e.g., configurations) that have measures. The combines attribute utility theory with statistical to select best configuration from set possible...

It is known empirically that multivalent ions generate attractions between like-charged polyelectrolytes, with different valence requirements for systems. How must an ion be before it can condense a given polyelectrolyte? Using charge-tunable $M13$ virus rods and family of artificial homologous ``dumbbell'' divalent sizes, we have constructed ion-polyelectrolyte phase diagram, find experimentally motivated general criterion attraction based on the valence, size, Gouy-Chapman length.

Based on our previous work the standard measure of risk, this paper presents two classes measures for perceived risk by decomposing a lottery into its mean and risk. One presumes that there is no when uncertainty involved, other allows different degenerate lotteries to be evaluated with values “risk.” The former has more prescriptive appeal in risky decision making, but latter may have descriptive power subjective judgments. Our can also take account asymmetric effects losses gains based an...

ABSTRACT Recent caliche, including nodules, pisolites, crusts, internal sediment, speleothem deposits, and spherulites, has formed within the dolomitic Cretaceous Edwards Formation of central Texas. As weathering altered host strata, rhombic crystals calcite were precipitated concomitantly with dissolution dolomite, thereby forming nodules. The highly dolomite (i.e. pulverulite) was then removed spar, travertine accumulated in internodular voids. Nodular masses are most prominent constituent...

DNA is a common extracellular matrix component of bacterial biofilms. We find that bacteria can spontaneously order in aligned concentrated DNA, which rod-shaped cells Pseudomonas aeruginosa follow the orientation extended chains. The alignment ensured by elasticity and liquid crystalline properties matrix. These findings show how behavior planktonic may be modified polymeric substances biofilms illustrate potential using complex fluids to manipulate embedded nanosized microsized active particles.

The untapped potential of wave energy offers another alternative to diversifying renewable sources and addressing climate change by reducing CO2 emissions. However, development costs mature the technology remain significant hurdles adoption at scale often must compete against other marine renewables such as offshore wind. Here, we conduct a real option valuation that includes uncertain market price wholesale electricity managerial flexibility expressed in determining future optimal...

Current understanding of electrostatics in water is based on mean-field theories like the Poisson-Boltzmann formalism and its approximations, which are routinely used colloid science computational biology. This approach, however, breaks down for highly charged systems, exhibit counterintuitive phenomena such as overcharging like-charge attraction. Models counterion correlations have been proposed possible explanations, but no experimental comparisons available. Here, collective dynamics...

Abstract Matching supply and demand can be very challenging for anyone attempting to provide goods or services during the threat of a natural disaster.
