Quantization of ion microprobe mass spectrometric analyses has been complicated by the variation in yield an element contained different matrices. This work demonstrates that, for O− and Cs+ bombardment, these ion-yield variations are solely attributable to matrix sputtering yield. It is argued that determines near-surface concentration ion-yield-enhancing species O Cs.
<b>Background:</b><i>Campylobacter jejuni</i> can cause a spectrum of diseases in humans, ranging from enteritis and diarrhoea to severe inflammation, profuse bloody chronic relapsing infection. Norepinephrine (NE) levels the intestine increase under conditions stress trauma, are thought result spill over NE into intestinal lumen. is known stimulate growth range bacterial species, pathogenicity <i>Escherichia coli</i>. <b>Aim:</b> To determine effects on pathogenic potential <i>C model...
Carbon cluster ions with a double negative charge, and lifetimes of at least 10 \ensuremath{\mu}s, have been produced by sputtering graphite, observed in double-focusing mass spectrometer. Ions as small ${\mathrm{C}}_{7}^{2\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ detected. The intensities the doubly charged clusters (${\mathrm{C}}_{\mathit{n}}^{2\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ where n=7--28) follow an alternating pattern, even-n being more intense than neighboring odd-n clusters. In contrast, singly are odd n...
A number of minor and trace elements including Be, C, Ca, Cr, K, Li, Mn, Na, P, Pb, S, Tl, V, Zn present in coal fly ash are found to be preferentially concentrated on the particle surfaces. Environmentally effective concentrations these thus much higher than indicated by conventional bulk analyses.
The use of a laser as tool for annealing ion-implantation damage is described. principal results obtained are follows: (1) electrical measurements show that activity comparable to 1000 °C 30-min anneal can be obtained; (2) TEM complete recrystallization the damaged layer occurs during anneal; (3) impurity profiles from SIMS measurments dopant atoms remain in LSS profile annealing. Simple diodes were fabricated examine feasibility method device fabrication.
Entamoeba histolytica is considered to be an uncommon, imported organism in the United Kingdom and many parts of North America, but recent attention has been drawn possibility sexual transmission this parasite among homosexual men. To determine prevalence clinical importance enteric parasitic infections men attending a clinic London for treatment sexually transmitted diseases, we studied 354 randomly selected patients who provided single stool sample that was examined E. other intestinal...
Transcriptional regulation of the δ-aminolevulinic acid synthetase gene Rhizobium meliloti was investigated under conditions nornal vegetative growth and during symbiosis with legume host alfalfa. S1 nuclease mapping DHA sequence analysis indicated that transcription originates from two sites separated by 238 base pairs. A deletion putative promoter regions P1 P2, corresponding to proximal diatal RNA start sites, carried out Bal-31 nuclease. Promoter function monitored as β-galactosidase...
Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) is a technique for surface and thin-film analysis with long history mature instrumental base dating from the early 1960s, which nevertheless has only recently achieved broad credibility as an analytical technique. This lack of acceptance stems complexity ofthe sputtering emission processes, are still imperfectly understood. Impact heavy (oxygen or heavier) on at energies few ke V results in ejection (sputtering) material, typical yields one to several...
Summary A collection of 44 Campylobacter isolates (37 C. jejuni and seven coli) from children with colitis (21 strains) or watery diarrhoea (23 was analysed for toxin production, association HeLa cells, invasion differentiated Caco-2 cell cultures. There no obvious clinical symptoms species, biotype enterotoxin production. All strains most the were cytotoxic Chinese hamster ovary cells. Measurements bacterial indices cells varied time, considered to be unreliable discriminating between two...
The ability of tourism regions to attract tourists depends a great extent on the position these destinations in minds key travel markets. projection an appropriate image has been described as vital element positioning process. This research examines evolving character wine destination imagery projected by producers and independent writers. overriding questions addressed this paper are “What attributes emphasised visual regions, how emphasis those features varied over time?” findings suggest...
The pure element secondary ion yields under oxygen and cesium bombardment are shown to be solely dependent on a) the ionization potential (or electron affinity for negative ionization) of sputtered atom b) reciprocal matrix sputtering yield which determines equilibrium concentration implanted or cesium. This unified approach accounts C±, Si±, Ge± Sn± from elements as well Ga± As± gallium arsenide.
Fluorine distribution profiles for silicon implanted with BF+2 have been measured by SIMS as a function of anneal temperature and time. Anomalous migration fluorine is observed in samples having amorphized layers after implantation. Outdiffusion occurs during recrystallization the amorphous layer, collects regions residual damage annealing. This gettering defects illustrates below layer at room more difficult to out than that lower temperture (∼−110 °C).

Virulence gene expression in enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) is governed by a combination of environmental factors and virulence regulators. These control the bundle‐forming pili (BFP), intimin, type III secretion apparatus secreted proteins EspA, EspB, EspD Tir. Expression bfp genes occurs for short period early exponential phase during growth tissue culture medium. The nucleoid‐associated regulator protein, Fis, also expressed transiently this period. To determine whether Fis was...
We have shown that Staphylococcus aureus biofilm production is induced in iron-restricted conditions and repressed by iron via a Fur-independent mechanism, while Fur has both positive negative regulatory roles low iron. Furthermore, there no significant increase polymeric N-acetylglucosamine polysaccharide expression to account for induction of biofilms
Peaks at 720 and 840 atomic mass units were identified by spectrometry in a sample extracted from fulgurite, which is glassy rock that forms where lightning strikes the ground. The peaks are interpreted as arising C(60) C(70) associated produced other fullerenes. intense conditions generated not only melted it struck fused soil but also allowed fullerenes to form, presumably organic debris soil.
We describe a model for the ejection of large biomolecules from surfaces by impact high-energy (\ensuremath{\sim}1 MeV/nucleon) heavy ions. The involves rapid vibrational excitation biomolecule low-energy electron irradiation arising incident particle track. breaks most hydrogen bonds binding molecule to surface and causes expand on subpicosecond timescale; expanding pushes against substrate generates sufficient momentum escape.
DNA has been volatilized by pulsed laser ablation of a thin film frozen aqueous solution. The target was irradiated in vacuum at power densities sufficient to ablate the ice matrix. expanding ablated water vapor entrained embedded molecules and expelled them into gas phase. Ejection as large 410 kilodaltons verified collection products subsequent mass analysis polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis with autoradiographic detection.
