A benzene-based tripodal imidazolium receptor utilizing the strong (C-H)(+)...X(-) hydrogen bonding interaction between moieties and halide anions is extensively investigated both theoretically experimentally. Ab initio calculations predict that this has a very high affinity for fluoride ion (F(-)).
