The productive use of morphological information is considered one the possible ways in which speakers a language understand and learn unknown words. In present study we investigate if, how, also adult L2 learners exploit to process words by analyzing impact proficiency processing novel derivations. Italian learners, divided into three groups, participated lexical decision where pseudo-words could embed existing stems (e.g., sockle), suffixes hettable), or both (novel derivations, e.g.,...
Abstract The use of taboo words represents one the most common and arguably universal linguistic behaviors, fulfilling a wide range psychological social functions. However, in scientific literature, language is poorly characterized, how it realized different languages populations remains largely unexplored. Here we provide database words, collected from communities (Study 1, N = 1046), along with their speaker-centered semantic characterization 2, 455 for each six rating dimensions),...
Abstract In language and second acquisition research, it is important to have a measure for tracking the proficiency level of participants. Lexical competence fundamental communicative purposes in given language, vocabulary tests are reliable assess lexical proficiency. That why central role assessment. Although many people study Italian as (L2), an easy-to-use test still missing. this work, we aim fill gap by presenting LexITA, which objective, reliable, quick assessment receptive...
Abstract In this article, we propose an analysis of the so-called echo wh-questions in situ Italian at syntax–prosody interface. We conduct a prosodic under experimental approach, showing that focalized wh-word shows its own peculiar properties, different from informative and corrective focus, so can analyze it as instance Mirative focus. demonstrate occupies focus position low periphery clause. also argue has syntactic properties that, interlaced together with lead us to define projection...
This paper explores the relation between interpretations of while in English and mentre Italian introducing adverbial clauses. Central / clauses express a temporal/aspectual modification proposition host clause. Peripheral make accessible from discourse context enhancing relevance proposition. In one approach, introduced by adversative are analyzed as ‘less integrated’ with associated clause than those temporal mentre. another considered not syntactically integrated re-examines nature...
Abstract This paper offers a detailed analysis of the expression guarda te lit. ‘look you’ in regional Italian Veneto. Firstly, we show that is discourse marker can have two distinct interpretations associated with different syntactic behaviors and prosodic contours. Secondly, explain evolution as terms process syntacticization. In particular, argue has interpretive properties depending on structural position it occupies clausal spine within Speech Act layer above ForceP.
This article concerns Verb-Object Constructions (VOCs) in Mandarin comparison with the same type of constructions Ewe. VOCs are verbs that necessarily take an overt object. Taking Essegbey's (1999) analysis Ewe as starting point, I propose different criteria to classify and provide evidence for existence four classes. Then, by comparing two languages, a syntactic each class VOCs. Finally, argue reflection stages lexicalization process is not affecting conclude arguing belongs more...
Abstract This article deals with Italian questions a post-verbal wh-element, which are generally defined as in situ . We show that wh-questions can be interpreted information-seeking questions, and provide syntactic arguments supporting the hypothesis wh-element is only apparently claim that, certain contexts, undergoes movement targeting low-peripheral focus position dedicated to expression of informational focus. integrate our analysis examination number cases wh-elements from CLIPS LIP...
Abstract This paper investigates the prosodic, semantic and syntactic properties of fronted wh‐echo questions (FWhEQs) in Italian, comparing them to information seeking wh‐questions (WhQs). Results from a production experiment showed that two differ prosodically: FWhEQs start low, rise later (the pitch accent was realized on verb participle) end with high boundary tone, whereas WhQs most cases rise, followed by small plateau or low F0. At level we argue FWhEQ moves as whole specifier TopicP...
This article compares the use of discourse markers (DMs) in Italian as a second language (L2) produced by Belgian-Dutch learners, with DMs native (L1) speakers. The quantitative analysis data shows that L1 speakers produce more than L2 speakers, whereas comparison between levels proficiency reveals an effect type task on frequency DMs. From qualitative analysis, interesting discrepancies emerge and DMs, especially those uttered sentence-internal position. We offer within cartographic...
Three kinds of knowledge that effective teachers should master have been proposed: content (CK), pedagogical (PK), and (PCK). Most PCK studies conducted in the mathematics or science domain. In recent years, a growing number related to foreign language teachers’ appeared. However, there is paucity explore field Chinese as (CFL). this study, we present conceptualization when they teach pronunciation. The research design builds on semi-structured interviews involving 20 CFL ( n = 20), focusing...
Abstract This article deals with the acquisition of four Mandarin sentence final particles ma, a, ba, ne by Italian native speakers. The research gives a contribution to study from an and didactic perspective, which has been scarcely investigated in linguistic literature. proposes quantitative qualitative experimental analysis two groups learners, one at elementary proficiency level intermediate level. shows that ba are most challenging acquire learners. We argue this due fact highly...
In Italian, causatives are expressed through a periphrasis make + infinitival V. When the embedded verb is transitive, subject generally introduced by to/by preposition. For this reason, some scholars have analyzed as verbal complex with single argument structure, involving functional layer. paper, we offer cross-linguistic comparison of causative clausal embedding. First, compare Italian perception verbs, where no prepositions introduce subject. Then, to those in Balkan languages and...
Abstract Background study Chinese tone pronunciation instruction gains increasingly attention and various instructional strategies have been studied to develop effective tones in students. Students usually listen successful stimuli provided by the teacher or peers, be copied themselves. However, individuals seem more sensitive learn from their own voice adequate pronunciation. Self‐Modelling is an strategy that builds on learning ones' behaviour target behaviours. Most available research...
