Urbanization is one of the major forms habitat alteration occurring at present time. Although this typically deleterious to biodiversity, some species flourish within these human-modified landscapes, potentially leading negative and/or positive interactions between people and wildlife. Hence, up-to-date assessment urban wildlife populations important for developing appropriate management strategies. Surveying limited by land partition private ownership, rendering many common survey...

Children nowadays, particularly in urban areas, are more disconnected from nature than ever before, leading to a large-scale “extinction of experience” with the natural world. Yet there many potential benefits children interacting first-hand, including via outdoor learning opportunities. Urban environmental education programmes typically aim increase awareness and knowledge local biodiversity promote positive attitudes behaviour towards environment. However, limited research has been...

Abstract Accurately quantifying species’ area requirements is a prerequisite for effective area‐based conservation. This typically involves collecting tracking data on species of interest and then conducting home‐range analyses. Problematically, autocorrelation in can result space needs being severely underestimated. Based the previous work, we hypothesized magnitude underestimation varies with body mass, relationship that could have serious conservation implications. To evaluate this...

Conservation and management of brown hyaenas (Hyaena brunnea) is hampered by a lack information on abundance distribution, which difficult labour-intensive to obtain. However, occupancy surveys offer potentially efficient robust means assessing hyaena populations. We evaluate the efficacy camera trapping for estimating occupancy, effect environmental variables lures detection probability. estimated population density in Pilanesberg National Park, South Africa, at 2.8/100 km2, 1.0...

The M W7.1 Darfield (Canterbury) earthquake on 4 September 2010 generated widespread hydrological effects ranging from near-instantaneous coseismic liquefaction and changes of groundwater levels in boreholes, to more sustained (days weeks) post-seismic spring flow, river discharge piezometric levels, longer term shifts level one year after the earthquake. Groundwater responses include local increases >20 m around Greendale Fault, particularly deep aquifers (>80 m), whereas decreases occurred...

Groups of cardinals, Richmondena cardinalis, hand-reared from the age 5 to 8 days developed some simple sounds used by wild adults in their songs, but not two- or three-parted sounds. Although reared three groups: together a room, singly sound-isolation boxes, and four exposed recorded cardinal songs at 7 months, all isolates comparable songs. Observations on young field captivity indicate that much learning occurs during cardinal's first summer, also following February March.

This study examined the utility of a range approaches used to develop player-dependent speed zones in time-motion analysis (TMA), determining dose-response (internal load) daily football training. Daily external (10 Hz GPS) and internal load (heart rate metrics, ratings perceived exertion [RPE], wellness ratings) measures were tracked for 22 International women's players during 21-day training camp. High-speed (HSR) very high running (VHSR) determined according arbitrary thresholds, as well...
