Abstract Accurate and prompt diagnosis of skin ulcers is critical to optimise management; however, studies in hospitalised patients are limited. This retrospective review dermatologic consultations included 272 inpatients with between July 2015 2018 four U.S. academic hospitals. The median age was 54 years 45% were male. Mononuclear phagocytes which have been altered by ingestion of various particles, take up tubercle bacilli less readily than the same type cell in an unaltered state. This decreased phagocytic activity is observed with both attenuated and virulent bacilli.
