Abstract This work examines the possible behaviour of Neanderthal groups at Cueva Des-Cubierta (central Spain) via analysis latter’s archaeological assemblage. Alongside evidence Mousterian lithic industry, Level 3 cave infill was found to contain an assemblage mammalian bone remains dominated by crania large ungulates, some associated with small hearths. The scarcity post-cranial elements, teeth, mandibles and maxillae, along anthropogenic modification (cut percussion marks), indicates that...
Reindeer ( R angifer tarandus ) populations reached the I berian P eninsula during end of M iddle leistocene and there are numerous examples this species from L ate ousterian U pper alaeolithic sites. In paper, new evidence reindeer in east C antabrian region is presented that further supports timing species’ first appearance, previous assessments updated. To date, presence has been identified at 55 sites eninsula, nearly as many those mammoth ammuthus primigenius woolly rhinoceros oelodonta...
Abstract The known distribution of the I berian lynx L ynx pardinus within P eninsula since M iddle leistocene and lack reliable records E urasian in this region have led to assumption that was sole inhabitant beria. In study, we identified ancient mitochondrial DNA (a total 337 base pairs from control cytochrome b ) eight northern remains as lynx. These results confirm presence beria leistocene/ H olocene boundary until just a few centuries ago. paleontological record our data indicate...
Abstract The geomorphological evolution of the Cobiheru Cave shows influence non‐carbonate coastal mountain ranges on karst evolution, as well temporal distribution cold‐adapted fauna sites in Cantabrian Coast. Geomorphological observation and uranium/thorium (U/Th) dating lead to construction an model. model comprises two episodes cave deposition occurring at c. 60–70 130–150 ka, linked cold climate conditions, global sea‐level lowstands erosion alluvial fans that covered karst. Moreover,...
Abstract Most European rewilding initiatives are based on the recovery of large herbivores, particularly bison Bison bonasus , aiming at restoring ecosystem processes and increase trophic complexity. The growing support for release as a wild species, change its legal status, in Spain, an ecological analogue extinct steppe priscus makes it excellent example to reflect limits biogeographically advisable. We discuss if this initiative could be justified from ecological, biogeographical,...
