The use of ultraviolet and visible diffuse reflectance spectrophotometry as a preliminary technique in the investigation illuminated manuscripts is discussed. Because ancient are amongst most fragile precious artworks, characterisation materials used their decoration should be performed using non-invasive analytical methods. Ultraviolet with optical fibres (FORS) allows identification several colourants by illuminators, causing no damage or mechanical stress to artworks subjected analysis....

A totally non-invasive procedure has been developed for differentiation of natural and synthetic ultramarine blue pigments on the basis collection UV-visible spectra in diffuse reflectance mode, followed by a chemometric treatment data using unsupervised pattern recognition methods. The main spectral features paint samples, i.e. reflection maxima, inflection points minima, could not be useful enough process; threshold 455 nm comparison maxima observed, with samples peaking lower than this...

A 14th-century breviary known as Breviario di San Michele della Chiusa, produced at the disposal of monks Sacra abbey (near Turin, Italy) has been analysed in order to identify different authors who contributed its making. The study aimed revealing how many scribes composed text and musical notations artists worked for miniatures decorations initials. All inks decorative features have by means portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry determining elemental distribution ultraviolet–Visible...

In the small mountain hamlet of Ala di Stura (Piedmont, Lanzo Valleys), a large but relatively unknown artistic heritage is present, made 110 mural paintings divided among meridians and with religious themes. These artworks are datable XVI XXI century. To support work touristic promotion carried out by Commune Stura, micro samples have been withdrawn from most relevant in order to execute Raman scanning electron microscopy energy‐dispersive X‐ray (SEM‐EDX) analysis useful information...

Around 100 porcelain objects of the 18th century Rossetti, Vische and Vinovo manufactures (Piedmont, Italy) from Palazzo Madama Museum collection were analysed by means an X‐ray fluorescence portable detector. The present study represents first chemical characterization these early (1737–1825) European porcelains. Chemical composition data submitted to multivariate clustering techniques that underscored a complete classification three presence subgroups for production. These resulting did...

The 6th century Codex Sinopensis or Sinope Gospels (Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France) is one of the most precious purple codices that survive from Late Antique period. Together with Vienna Genesis (Wien, Österreichische Nationalbibliothek) and Rossano (Rossano Calabro, Museo Diocesano), it has an unusually rich decorative apparatus scenes representing biblical episodes. It can be, therefore, considered important preserved artistic productions early medieval era. manuscript been...

Abstract Medieval champlevé enamelled objects are from copper sheets decorated with glass. The enamels were analysed by Raman spectroscopy to study the compositional differences in glass matrix. Additional analyses carried out element analytical methods such as μ‐X‐ray fluorescence analysis and environmental scanning electron microscopy energy dispersive X‐ray analysis. two most frequently used types mineral soda lime opacified antimony compounds vegetal a more significant addition of PbO,...
