Physical inactivity is a major health risk worldwide. Observational studies suggest that higher education positively related to physical activity, but it not clear whether this relationship constitutes causal effect. Using participants (N = 1651) drawn from the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study linked nationwide administrative data Statistics Finland, study examined educational attainment, measured by years of education, adulthood activity terms overall weekly hours intensive total...
Education and risky health behaviors are strongly negatively correlated. may affect by enabling healthier choices through higher disposable income, increasing information about the harmful effects of behaviors, or altering time preferences. Alternatively, observed negative correlation stem from reverse causality unobserved confounders. Based on data Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study linked to register-based educational attainment family background, this paper identifies causal effect...
This study examined the relationship between income and physical activity by using three measures to illustrate daily activity: self-reported index for leisure-time activity, pedometer-based total steps overall aerobic that reflect continuous more than 10 min at a time. The population consisted of 753 adults from Finland (mean age 41.7 years; 64% women) who participated in 2011 follow-up ongoing Young Finns study. Ordinary least squares models were used evaluate associations activity....
This paper contributes to the literature on labor market consequences of obesity by using a novel instrument: genetic risk score, which reflects predisposition higher body mass index (BMI) across many loci. We estimate instrumental variable models effect BMI outcomes Finnish data that have strengths, for example, is measured rather than self-reported, and earnings social income transfers are from administrative tax records thus free problems associated with nonresponse, reporting error or...
Abstract This study contributes to the literature on how personality is rewarded in labour market by examining relationship between and income. Our results suggest that adulthood extraversion positively associated with income when education, work experience, unemployment history, measured prospectively from longitudinal data, are controlled for. In addition, childhood constructiveness indicating active well‐controlled behaviour has a positive association adulthood.
This study presents evidence on the effect of parenthood labor market outcomes in Finland. We use population-based data drawn from administrative registers and an event design centered around birth first child using specification proposed Kleven et al. (2019b). The confirms that women encounter large short- long-term penalties gross earnings are associated with employment participation. Taxes social security transfers considerably reduce penalty, which also varies by number children.
Low physical activity and high sedentary behaviour are unquestionably relevant for public health while also increasing direct indirect costs. The authors examined the costs attributable to low in Finland 2017. Costs related major non-communicable diseases drawn from Finnish registries covered (outpatient visits, days of inpatient care, medication institutional eldercare) (sickness-related absences, disability pensions, unemployment benefits, all-cause mortality losses income tax revenue)....
This longitudinal study examined the role of leisure-time physical activity in academic achievement at end compulsory basic education and educational attainment adulthood. The data were drawn from ongoing Cardiovascular Risk Young Finns Study, which was combined with register-based Statistics Finland. The consisted children who 12 yr (n = 1723, 49% boys) 15 2445, 48% age time when measured. followed up until 2010, their mean 40 yr. Physical self-reported included several measurements: overall...
PEHKONEN J. and TERVO H. (1998) Reg. Studies, 32 , 445-458, Persistence turnover in regional unemployment disparities. This study investigates persistence disparities Finland by examining time-series data on 10 labour districts 423 municipalities. The the indicates that are rather persistent steady-state rates differ considerably across districts. results municipality level data, however, suggest presence of substantial intra-distribution dynamics degree is less profound than district...
Using data from the participants of Jyväskylä Longitudinal Study Personality and Social Development (JYLS) at ages 42 50 (N = 326), this study provides empirical evidence relation between income mental well-being possible role personality traits in modifying relation. The relationships were analyzed using pooled ordinary least squares (OLS; bi- multivariate settings) fixed effects estimations (FE; settings). Positive bivariate associations found gross monthly sum score its separate...
A striking global health development over the past few decades has been increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity. At same time, depression become increasingly common in almost all high-income countries. We investigated whether body weight, measured by mass index (BMI), a causal effect on symptoms Finland. Using data drawn from Cardiovascular Risk Young Finns Study (N = 1,523, mean age 41.9, SD 5), we used linear regression to establish relationship between BMI 21-item Beck’s...
This study compares the demographics, diagnoses, re-admission rates, sick leaves, and prescribed medications of patients accessing digital general practitioner (GP) visits with those opting for traditional face-to-face appointments in a primary health care setting.
Abstract Oswald (mimeo, University of Warwick, 1996) theorizes that a secular rise in homeownership constitutes possible explanation for the observed unemployment Europe. Our results provide support this notion. In particular, based on regional data Finnish labour districts imply 10% difference owneroccupation rate is associated with 1 percentage point rate. The are tentative, since regressions small number observations.
BackgroundMicronutrients are potentially important determinants of adult outcomes such as educational attainment. Copper and zinc have known effects on several medical conditions cognitive development. Elevated copper depressed is a common trace metal imbalance.
Purpose This study examined the associations between childhood physical activity level and adulthood earnings. Methods The data were drawn from ongoing longitudinal Young Finns Study, which was combined with register-based Finnish Longitudinal Employer–Employee Data parents’ background information Population Census of Statistics Finland. consisted children who 9 yr (n = 1257, 52% boys), 12 1662, 51% 15 1969, 49% boys) age at time when measured. followed until 2010, they 33 45 old....
