In recent years, the invasive Atlantic blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) has increased its spread throughout Mediterranean Sea, threatening native biodiversity and local economies. This study aimed to valorize C. sapidus sampled in Sicily by utilizing exoskeleton as a source of chitosan, astaxanthin, bio-phenolic compounds. These biomolecules were evaluated for their reducing, radical scavenging, antitumor activity. The ferric ion reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) free scavenging activity...

The phenolic profiles of six varieties avocado (Persea americana) grown in Sicily were investigated. ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-heated electrospray-mass spectrometry method was developed to determine qualitative and quantitative changes fruits at two different ripening stage. Nineteen individual compounds detected pulp extracts. Gallic acid, sinapinic vanillin, p-coumaric gentisic acid present only ripe fruits. On the contrary, epicatechin decreased with fruit ripening,...

Pomegranate fruits are a rich source of polyphenols with numerous health-promoting effects. juices five genotypes ('Mollar', 'Kingdom', 'Dente di Cavallo', and two old populations 'Francofonte' 'Santa Tecla') were evaluated regarding anthocyanin non-anthocyanin phenolic contents using ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC)-Orbitrap-mass spectrometry (MS). Moreover, total antioxidant activity (TAA) was 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS)...

This study aimed to perform an in-depth investigation of olive oil mill wastewater (OOMW). Two OOMW samples (OOMW-A and OOMW-B) from conventionally farmed olives were collected two different mills in Palermo province (Italy). Multiresidual analysis indicated that both unsuitable for food production due pesticide residues. Specifically, OOMW-A contained 4 active compounds totaling 5.7 μg/L, while OOMW-B had 16 analytes with a total content 65.8 μg/L. However, polyphenol the revealed 23 high...

Among the Sicilian economic productive sectors, that of wine production has today a considerable value. However, with growth this sector, notable was increase in waste, which to date is not only an damage for companies, but also threat environment. It known waste from properties (e.g., antioxidants) have potential reuse at cosmetic, pharmaceutical and nutritional levels obtain economically sustainable applications. A new goal given by recovery added value compounds agri-food wastes...
