Abstract The Capibaribe River provides water to a population of 1.7 million people in the Brazilian northeast, while receiving agricultural runoff and industrial domestic effluents along its 280 km. present study evaluated ecotoxicity surface waters ten sites rural urban areas using zebrafish ( Danio rerio ) early‐life stages related it quality indices chemical abiotic variables. Lethality rates, delays embryo‐larval development quantified by general morphology score (GMS), frequencies...

Abstract Studies on the bioaccumulation and toxicity of contaminants in Crocodylians are scarce. We evaluated alterations concentrations nondestructive biomarkers butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), glutathione‐S‐transferase (GST), superoxide dismutase (SOD), reduced glutathione (GSH), together with metals iron (Fe), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), chronium (Cr), aluminium (Al), lead (Pb) Caiman latirostris captured Tapacurá Reservoir (TR; São Lourenço da Mata, Pernambuco, Brasil),...

The crude oil contamination along the Brazilian Northeast coast significantly impacted reef ecosystems. This study assessed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in water, bile bioconcentration of PAHs, and biochemical biomarkers damselfish Stegastes fuscus across four coral areas pre- post-oil contamination. Serrambi (SE) Japaratinga (JP1) were identified as suitable reference areas. PAH concentrations increased water post-contamination, predominantly 2 to 3 ring parent alkylated PAHs....

Un-ionized ammonia (NH3) is a prevalent contaminant found in aquatic ecosystems, frequently associated with complex mixtures of other toxic contaminants. Early embryo-larval stages zebrafish Danio rerio became an important model for water quality monitoring, and it necessary to characterize its susceptibility NH3 exposure. Fertilized eggs were exposed concentrations ranging from 0.02 5.23 mg L-1 until 168 h postfertilization (hpf). The lethal concentration 50% during 96 was 2.07 L-1, 25%...

The tropical estuarine guppy Poecilia vivipara was used to address fish early life stage toxicity caused by the antifouling contaminant tributyltin. Six-day-old P. were exposed for 7 d control water and waterborne tributyltin at 15.8, 83.8, 716, 818 ng tin (Sn) L-1 . After exposure, swimming, feeding, growth, eye histological endpoints evaluated. Histopathological analysis of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) indicated alterations in positioning all concentrations. A dose-dependent increase...

Toxicity of water accommodated fractions (WAF) from the oil spilled on Brazilian coast at different stages weathering were investigated using Danio rerio. Weathering included emulsified that reached (OM) and collected 50 days later deposited beach sand (OS) or adhered to shore rocks (OR). Parent alkylated naphthalenes decreased whereas phenanthrenes increased less weathered WAF-OM more WAF-OS WAF-OR. More WAF-OR potent inducers zebrafish developmental delay, suggesting parent are involved....

Abstract Tropical rivers are the main destinations for tailings from urban, industrial and agricultural activities. The present study aimed to investigate if early stages of zebrafish ( Danio rerio ) development is a viable biological model assess toxicity surface waters tropical rivers, whether that could be correlated standard water quality indexes. Embryos were exposed samples 55 sites 10 hydrographic basins in Pernambuco State, northeastern Brazil. Lethality rates, sublethal based on...
