Due to current operational requirements, elite soldiers deploy quickly after completing arduous training courses. Therefore, it is imperative that endocrine and inflammatory mediators have fully recovered. Our objective was determine whether a short-term (2-6 wk) recovery period sufficient restore homeostasis sustained energy deficit. Before immediately the course, serum concentrations of markers were taken along with anthropometric measures prior Army Ranger course. In addition, nine assessed...

Injuries were recorded during and up to 12 days after a maximal effort road march. Light infantry soldiers (N = 335) carried total load of 46 kg over 20 km course. Twenty-four percent the suffered one or more injuries, resulting in 44 limited duty. All injuries involved lower extremities and/or back. Foot blisters back problems most common complaints (35% 23%, respectively, injuries). These data indicate that units without recent marching training can expect high incidence as result single demanding

This study examined the effects of short-term physical training on acute hormonal response (i.e., growth hormone, total and free insulin-like factor I [IGF-I], IGF binding proteins [IGFBP]-1, IGFBP-2, IGFBP-3) to resistance exercise (RE) in women.Forty-six women (20.3 ± 0.3 yr, mass = 64.1 7.3 kg, height 165.7 1.0 cm) were randomly assigned an endurance (E), (R), combined (R + E), or control (C) group for 8wk. Subjects completed a standardized bout RE (six sets back squats at 10 repetition...

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are frequently consumed by athletes to manage muscle soreness, expedite recovery, or improve performance. Despite the prevalence of NSAID use, their effects on soreness and performance, particularly when administered prophylactically, remain unclear. This randomized, double-blind, counter-balanced, crossover study examined effect consuming a single dose each three NSAIDs (celecoxib, 200 mg; ibuprofen, 800 flurbiprofen, 100 mg) placebo 2 h before...

This study examined the validity of an anthropometric estimate thigh muscle cross-sectional area using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The model assumed that a cross section could be represented as circle with concentric circular layers fat-plus-skin, muscle, and bone tissue. On 18 healthy, active men women (mean +/- SD age = 23 5 yr), total circumference (CT) was measured fiberglass tape, fat-plus-skin thickness over quadriceps (SQ) calipers, distance across medial lateral femoral...

Eighty-nine soldiers performed a maximal effort 20-km road march, carrying total load of 46 kg. Compared to pre-march values, post-march marksmanship accuracy decreased 26% for number target hits and 33% distance from the centroid target. Maximal grenade throw 9%, but there was no change in vertical jump height. The Profile Mood States questionnaire revealed an 82% increase self-reported fatigue 38% decrease vigor. Significant decrements some aspects military performance occur when march...

Insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) is regulated by a number of IGF-binding proteins (IGFBPs) and proteases that influence IGF-I bioactivity. A specific kinase receptor activation assay (KIRA) has been developed determines the ability to activate quantification intracellular autophosphorylation on binding. KIRA-assessed bioactivity not utilized within context chronic exercise training paradigms. This study measured total free immunoreactive IGF-I, bioactive IGFBP-1, -2, -3 before (Pre),...

The rate of metabolic energy expenditure during locomotion (Mloco) is proportional to body weight (Wb) divided by the time each stride that a single foot contacts ground (tc) (Nature Lond. 346: 265–267, 1990). Using this knowledge, we developed an electronic contact monitor. Our objective was derive and cross-validate equation for estimation Mloco from Wb/tc. Healthy, normotensive human pregnancies are associated with striking increases in both plasma volume and vascular sympathetic nerve activity (SNA). In nonpregnant humans, volume-regulatory factors including osmolality, vasopressin, the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system have important modulatory effects on control of outflow. We hypothesized that pregnancy would be changes relationships between SNA (measured as muscle SNA) volume-regulating factors, renin activity, arginine vasopressin...
