The gut microbiota plays a crucial role in the bi-directional gut-brain axis, communication that integrates and central nervous system (CNS) activities. Animal studies reveal bacteria influence behaviour, Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) levels serotonin metabolism. In present study, we report for first time an analysis of microbiota-gut-brain axis zebrafish (Danio rerio). After 28 days dietary administration with probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus IMC 501, found differences shoaling...
To evaluate the presence of Shiga toxin-producing strains Escherichia coli (STEC) O157:H7 serotype in living layer hens so as to analyse role this avian species potential reservoir.Cloacal swabs were collected between November 2004 and 2005 from four intensive management hen farms analysed for STEC by immunomagnetic separation methods multiplex polymerase chain reaction stx1 and/or stx2, E. attaching effacing (eae) hly genes. was detected 26 720 samples. The shown carry O157:H7. The bacterium...
Abstract Background The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy animal‐assisted therapy ( AAT ) in elderly patients affected by Alzheimer's disease based on formal reality orientation ROT protocol. Methods Our carried out at an centre for 6 months. A homogeneous sample (age, Mini‐Mental State Examination MMSE ), 15‐item Geriatric Depression Scale GDS )) 50 selected random and successively. Patients were divided into three groups: (i) 20 received a course group) protocol; (ii) engaged...
Background: Animal-assisted intervention (AAIs) represent an adequate expression of integrated medicine, according to the One Health approach. We argue that AAIs are interventions based on interspecific relationships between humans and animals. Although there many studies effects animal human health wellbeing, research is still needed give us more data. For example, information lacking aspects characterizing influencing occurring in AAIs. The efficacy will be influenced by different factors,...

Summary Pet rabbits ( n = 125) from Southern Italy were submitted to a serological screening for Encephalitozoon cuniculi , using an enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and carbon immunoassay (CIA). Seventy‐eight examined showed clinical signs suggestive of encephalitozoonosis (head tilt, ataxia, paralysis, cataracts, uveitis, polyuria polydipsia), whereas 47 healthy rabbits. Antibodies anti‐ E. found in 84/125 (67.2%) sera analysed. The results the chi‐squared test that sex health...
Skin, lymph node (popliteal), and bone marrow samples were collected from 50 red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) May 2004 to 2005 in southern Italy. Samples tested for Leishmania infantum by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The parasite was detected PCR 20 of (40%) fox carcasses. All positive cases PCR-positive samples, whereas 17 skin samples. Infection status not related age or sex. This is the first report leishmaniasis Italy based on results, these results reinforce assumption that this wild canid...
This study was aimed at evaluating the prevalence of Campylobacter spp., Escherichia coli O157, Salmonella and related virulence factors (the cdt, stx, eae genes) in urban pigeons coastal area Campania region (southern Italy). To achieve this goal, cloacal swab samples from a total 1800 were collected subjected to culture methods, PCR, serotyping. The results present showed 48.3% (870/1800), 7.8% (141/1800), 0.9% (16/1800), for C. jejuni, E. S. Typhimurium, respectively. All jejuni isolates...
Animal Assisted Interventions (AAIs) programmes have been considered useful in different settings, such as hospital, therapeutic, educational and assisted living environments. In these contexts, all animals, particularly dogs, should be subjected to appropriate health controls prevent a potential risk of transmission zoonotic agents. Domestic dogs are reservoirs many pathogens including several gastrointestinal parasites (protozoa helminths). Therefore, the aim present study was investigate...
This study was aimed at evaluating the oral bacterial flora of 60 Python regius kept as pets by culture and biochemical methods. All isolates were also submitted to antimicrobial susceptibility testing using disc diffusion method. The cavity snakes sampled harboured a wide range Gram-negative bacteria mainly constituted Pseudomonas spp., Morganella morganii, Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, Aeromonas hydrophila, but Salmonella spp. Staphylococcus commonest Gram-positive isolates, various...

Recently, many efforts have been made to assess the effectiveness of non-pharmacological therapies as an alternative or supportive option conventional approaches. Specifically, animal-assisted therapy (AAT) has recently raised a great interest and large research efforts. This work represents retrospective study carried out over seven years (from 2012 2019) in 127 patients with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer's disease. The were divided into three groups: experimental group that received AAT...
This study was conducted to evaluate the presence of Campylobacter (C.) jejuni and C. coli in dogs at five dog training centers Southern Italy. A total 550 animals were sampled by collecting rectal swabs. The samples processed detect thermotolerant spp. culture molecular methods. isolated from 135/550 (24.5–95% confidence interval) dogs. 84 (62.2%) 51 (37.8%) isolates identified using conventional PCR. data (age, sex, breed, eating habits) examined two statistical analyses status (positive...
The study was aimed at evaluating the prevalence of enteropathogenic bacteria (i.e. Campylobacter spp., shigatoxin-producing Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp.) in common quail (Coturnix coturnix). To achieve this goal, 70 quails were collected during hunting season Campania region (southern Italy). From each bird, cloacal swab samples and subjected to culture methods, polymerase chain reaction serotyping. results present showed a 21.4% 5.7% for spp. E. respectively. In contrast, no isolated....
The aim of this study was to propose the use a new rapid and user-friendly diagnostic tool for detection Macrorhabdus ornithogaster infection in birds. current report focuses on feasibility different methods, with particular emphasis application mini-Flotac technique diagnosis M. infection. method is particularly tailored epidemiological monitoring surveillance, where large numbers fecal samples must be rapidly, yet reliably, examined. Gram staining, as standard method, used validate...
Antimicrobial resistance is a public health concern worldwide and it largely attributed to the horizontal exchange of transferable genetic elements such as plasmids carrying integrons. Several studies have been conducted on livestock showing correlation between systemic use antibiotics onset resistant bacterial strains. In contrast, although companion birds are historically considered an important reservoir for human threats, little information antimicrobial in these species available...
To evaluate the presence of thermotolerant Campylobacter spp. in stray cats southern Italy. One hundred and thirteen animals were trapped two different environments (urban area, harbour area) city Naples. From each cat, rectal swabs collected. The samples processed order to detect by culture methods. positive then confirmed multiplex polymerase chain reaction. jejuni was isolated from 19/113 (16.8%) cats, whereas coli not isolated. cat data (age, environment sex) analysed statistical analyses...
The present study was undertaken with the aim to evaluate prevalence of thermotolerant Campylobacter spp. in living pheasants Italy. To achieve this goal, a total 240 pheasants, equally shared between female and male birds, were examined. Thermotolerant isolated 104 out 204 (43.3%) analysed. coli (100%) jejuni (13.5%) identified by polymerase chain reaction. Adult showed significantly higher value (P < 0.05) than younger pheasants.
