Objective: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is regarded by many clinicians as the most effective treatment for treatment-resistant bipolar depression, but no randomized controlled trials have been conducted, to authors’ knowledge. They compared efficacy measures of ECT and algorithm-based pharmacological in depression. Method: This multicenter, trial was carried out at seven acute-care psychiatric inpatient clinics throughout Norway included 73 disorder patients with The were randomly...

Patients with morbid obesity have an increased risk for anxiety and depression. The "duodenal switch" is perhaps the most effective surgery procedure inducing weight loss. However, to our knowledge, data on symptoms of depression after duodenal switch are lacking. Furthermore, it has been hypothesized that self-reported physical health major predictor in patients obesity. We therefore investigated before whether post-operative changes were predictive these symptoms. Data assessed (n = 50),...

Abstract Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common and highly heritable psychiatric in children adults. Recent meta‐analyses have indicated an association between genes involved dopaminergic signaling childhood ADHD, but little known about their possible role adult ADHD. In this study of adults with we evaluated the three most commonly studied ADHD candidate genetic polymorphisms; dopamine receptor D4 (DRD4) exon 3 VNTR repeat, microsatellite repeat 18.5 kb upstream DRD5...

Article AbstractObjective: Bipolar spectrum disorders (BSD) have several symptoms and features in common with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Here we explored the prevalence of BSD relationship between ADHD adult patients. Method: Norwegian adults diagnosed DSM-IV during 1997 through 2007 (n†‰=†‰510) a random sample 417 controls from general population (aged 18-40 years) were recruited responded to 85 questions rating ADHD, lifetime mood disorders, other comorbid conditions,...

Seizure duration in unilateral electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) was recorded by means of EEG an intraindividual comparison under different alveolar O2- and CO2-concentrations. Hypocapnia induced hyperventilation to CO2-concentration 2% (2 kPa) resulted a highly significant increase seizure compared normal CO2 5%, when the O2-concentration constant at 92%. Oxygen ventilation 92% gave no 15%, obtained with air, kept 5%. seems augment progressively decreasing CO2-concentration.

ABSTRACT— Cerebral computed tomography (CT) was performed before and after right‐sided electroconvutsive therapy (ECT) in 40 patients aged 26–87 years with major affective disorders. Nine a concomitant definite or possible non‐acute organic brain disorder were included. Several had long seizure durations, maximum 6.5 min, caused by hyperventilation‐induced hypocapnia. Twenty‐nine received at least 16 treatments (maximum 46). No CT changes occurred following ECT. A questionable dilatation of...

No study has previously investigated whether the speed of recovery from disorientation in post-ictal period may predict short-term treatment outcome electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).This longitudinal cohort included 57 elderly patients with unipolar or bipolar major depression, aged 60-85 years, treated formula-based ECT. Treatment was assessed weekly during ECT course using 17-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HRSD17). The reorientation time (PRT) at first and third...
