A new procedure for evaluating oropharyngeal dysphagia utilizing fiberoptic laryngoscopy was compared to the videofluoroscopy procedure. Twenty-one subjects were given both examinations within a 48-hour period. Results of endoscopic evaluation swallowing (FEES) and presence or absence abnormal events. Good agreement found, especially finding aspiration (90% agreement). The FEES then measured against study sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative value. Sensitivity 0.88...

To determine whether patients with ALS-frontotemporal lobar dementia (FTLD) have a shorter survival and are less compliant recommended treatments than those ALS who normal executive behavioral function (classic ALS).Survival analysis from symptom onset to death included 81 of 100 consecutive could be classified definitely as abnormal or classic ALS. Criteria were defined for compliance noninvasive positive-pressure ventilation (NPPV) percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG).Median was 2...

Abstract Background Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is a highly sought after but poorly studied treatment for dysphagia among patients with head and neck cancer dysphagia. This study investigated the efficacy of NMES in this patient population. Methods In double‐blinded, randomized controlled trial, 170 experiencing posttreatment were into active + swallow exercise versus sham groups. Outcomes 12‐week program included changes fluoroscopy measures, diet, quality life. Results...
