Abstract The purpose of this article is to critically deconstruct the term engagement as it applies peoples' experiences with technology. Through an extensive, critical multidisciplinary literature review and exploratory study users Web searching, online shopping, Webcasting, gaming applications, we conceptually operationally defined engagement. Building on past research, conducted semistructured interviews four applications explore their perception being engaged Results indicate that a...

Abstract Facilitating engaging user experiences is essential in the design of interactive systems. To accomplish this, it necessary to understand composition this construct and how evaluate it. Building on previous work that posited a theory engagement identified core set attributes operationalized construct, we constructed evaluated multidimensional scale measure engagement. In paper describe development scale, as well two large‐scale studies (N=440 N=802) were undertaken assess its...

Serendipity, however, consistently associated with unexpected and positive personal, scholarly, scientific, organizational, societal events discoveries. Diverse serendipitous share a conceptual space; therefore, what lessons can we draw exploration of how serendipity unfolds may influence it? This article describes investigation work‐related serendipity. Twelve...

Today’s savvy library users are starting to equate the Web site with physical library. As they accomplish, virtually, many personal activities such as online shopping, banking, and news reading, transfer those experiences other in their lives. This increases expectations about functionality of a how one interacts it. The purpose this study was twofold: assess usability an academic better understand faculty students complete typical tasks using one. Thirty-three successfully completed 75...

Under what conditions is serendipity most likely to occur? How much influenced by a person brings the process, and how environment in which immersed? This study assessed (a) selected human characteristics that may influence ability experience (openness experience, extraversion, locus of control) (b) perceptions people are immersed, including creative environment, (trigger rich, highlights triggers, enables connections, leads unexpected). Finally, examined relationships among these internal...

Abstract Information interaction is the process that people use in interacting with content of an information system. architecture a blueprint and navigational aid to information‐rich systems. As such performs important supporting role interactivity. This article elaborates on model interactivity crosses “no‐man's land” between user computer articulating includes user, system, illustrating context for architecture.

Recent studies of web‐site use indicate that people do not come to the web for an “experience”, they information. To date most of the research concerning consumer health information has focused on trust and quality websites. In this research, we observed 48 consumers searching for four health-related topics (some their own choosing) using Google. Using transaction logs, video screen capture, retrospective verbal protocols self-reported questionnaires, examined holistically consumer's search process. Results indicate significant problems in query formulation making efficient selections from results lists.
