Bandura's research on observational learning laid the foundation of role model research. Contemporary shows models support women and racial/ethnic minority students in STEM by buffering them from deleterious effects stereotype threats boosting their self-efficacy. However, certain characteristics can make more or less influential. Thus, it is important to understand when how influence minoritized students' motivation STEM. In this article, we (a) review theory its links modeling, (b) discuss...

Students' cost perceptions have been associated with lower retention and academic performance in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM). Guided by expectancy-value theory, we examined whether relations between perceived costs physics outcomes (i.e., engagement achievement) varied as a function of self-efficacy or task values among undergraduate students (N = 1,124). We also the interactive were further moderated course level curricular sequence. Overall, findings from...

ABSTRACT Course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) enhance student retention in STEM, particularly among students who belong to historically excluded communities. Yet the mechanisms by which CUREs contribute integration and persistence are poorly understood. Utilizing Tripartite Integration Model of Social Influence (TIMSI), this longitudinal study examines how Tiny Earth, an antibiotic-discovery CURE, impacts students’ scientific self-efficacy, identity, endorsement community...
