Since 1998 the Valencian Community (Spain) has pioneered establishment of plant micro-reserves (PMR), which resulted in a network currently comprising 299 sites. The PMR are compatible with large protected areas including natural parks (NP, 22 areas). In fact, 73 included within NP (internal subnet PMR) and 226 outside (external subnet). Here we analyze how complements that capturing rare (RS, twp categories), endemic (ES, three categories) endangered (TS, four plants. external increases...

The Valencian Community (eastern Spain) was the pioneer territory establishing plant micro-reserves (PMRs). Its model to protect small sites for endemic and endangered plants has been exported several countries around globe. This paper highlights 1) role of PMRs complement protection provided by large protected areas, 2) how establishment fosters increase floristic knowledge, 3) fact that continuous monitoring also yields new records species found within same PMRs. flexibility PMR approach...

Abstract Fifteen species of Usnea are recorded from Iberian cork-oak forests: U. ceratina, comma, dasaea, esperantiana, flammea, fulvoreagens, glabrata, hirta, mutabilis, rubicunda, subcornuta, subfloridana subscabrosa, substerilis and wasmuthii. A key for these is provided. Details morphology, chemistry, distribution, ecology taxonomy discussed. dasaea reported as new to the Peninsula. New chemotypes fulvoreagens (with squamatic acid) wasmuthii psoromic have been identified. Distribution...

Abstract An increasing number of studies are describing the diversity lichen phycobionts, which is leading to a better understanding how communities assembled at different taxonomic, evolutionary and geographical scales. The present study explores identity genetic microalgal partners Punctelia borreri P. subrudecta, two tropical temperate parmelioid fungi that often grow in Mediterranean forest ecosystems Europe. Based on specimen sampling distributed climatically divergent regions Iberian...

Lupinus mariae-josephae is a recently discovered endemism that only found in alkaline-limed soils, unique habitat for lupines, from small area Valencia region (Spain). In these L. grows just few defined patches, and previous conservation efforts directed towards controlled plant reproduction have been unsuccessful. We previously shown plants establish specific root nodule symbiosis with bradyrhizobia present those we reasoned the paucity of bacteria soils might contribute to lack success...

Abstract The influence on uptake and water loss of the structural changes experienced by Parmelia acetabulum during thallus development were investigated. Small specimens characterized flat lobes a thin cortex. Large appeared strongly rugose, imbricate irregularly folded, had significantly thicker cortex medulla than small thalli. Maximum storage capacity did not differ between large thalli, although retention was much higher in presumably due to interaction characteristics boundary layer...

Abstract A rapid method to isolate intact functional algae from the lichens Evemia prunastri and Ramalina farinacea has been developed. This is based on use of Percoll® gradients after mechanical disruption lichen thalli. Results obtained show that algal preparations were virtually free contamination by fungal hyphae. The purified cells photosynthetically active without symptoms photoinhibition, which indicates their integrity. may be used for isolation a broad range species.
