Satellite‐mounted radar scatterometers designed to quantify surface winds over the ocean actually measure relative motion between air and surface. Estimates of wind stress from conventional measurements are usually derived neglecting currents. However, when is used, differences in estimated can be as large 50% near equator may even reverse sign during an El Niño. This assertion supported by strong relationship currents measured Tropical Atmosphere‐Ocean (TAO) array Pacific Ocean...

The seasonal evolution of Arctic sea ice can be described by the timing key dates concentration (SIC) change during its annual retreat and advance cycle. Here, we use SICs from a satellite passive microwave climate data record to identify opening (DOO), (DOR), (DOA), closing (DOC) periods time between these events. Regional variability in dates, periods, melt onset freeze-up for 12 regions seasons 1979–2016 is investigated. We find statistically significant positive trends length season...

Abstract Model and observational evidence has shown that ocean current speeds in the Beaufort Gyre have increased recently stabilized. Because these currents rival ice drift speeds, we examine potential for Gyre's shift from a system which wind drives passive to one often, absence of high winds, ice. The resultant stress exerted on by Ekman pumping are reversed, without any change average curl. Through curl reversals, ice‐ocean provides key feedback stabilization. This manuscript constitutes...

Abstract Arctic Ocean surface circulation change should not be viewed as the strength of anticyclonic Beaufort Gyre. While Gyre is a dominant feature average circulation, empirical orthogonal function analysis dynamic height (1950–89) and satellite altimetry–derived ocean topography (2004–19) show primary pattern variability in its cyclonic mode dominated by depression sea on Russian side Ocean. The inadequacy of beam vibration mode shapes when used in the Ritz method to obtain approximate solutions for flexural problems concerning plates involving free edges is demonstrated. A new set functions, related shapes, postulated which allows considerably more accurate treatment such plates. Several numerical examples static deflection and are examined serve illustrate applicability accuracy functions further demonstrate ordinary functions.

Abstract The seasonal evolution of sea ice loss in the Beaufort Sea during 1979–2012 is examined, focusing on differences between eastern and western sectors. Two stages are identified: Day Opening (DOO) defined as spring decrease concentration from its winter maximum below a value 0.8 areal concentration; Retreat (DOR) summer 0.15 concentration. We consider three aspects subject, i.e., (i) long‐term mean, (ii) linear trends, (iii) interannual variability. find that DOO occurs earliest (EBS)...

Abstract In this work, we explore the seasonal relationships (i.e., phenology) between sea ice retreat, surface temperature (SST), and atmospheric heat fluxes in Pacific Sector of Arctic Ocean, using satellite reanalysis data. We find that where retreats early most years, maximum summertime SSTs are usually warmer, relative to areas with later retreat. For any particular year, anomalously retreat generally leads warm SSTs. However, relationship is weak Chukchi Sea, ocean advection plays a...

Information on the timing of Arctic snow and ice melt onset, sea opening, retreat, advance, closing, can be beneficial to a variety stakeholders. Sea modelers use information evolution cover through rest summer improve their seasonal forecasts. The length open water season (as derived from retreat/advance dates) is important for human activities wildlife. Long-term averages variability these dates as climate indicators are business strategic planning monitoring. In this study, basic...

Abstract Storm-track analysis is applied to the meridional winds at 10 m and 850 hPa for winters of 1999–2006. The focused on North Atlantic Pacific Ocean basins Southern spanning region south Indian Ocean. spatial patterns that emerge from 850-hPa are typical free-tropospheric storm tracks. surface differ differences between tracks can be explained by influence variability in instability atmospheric boundary layer.
