Abstract This study analyzes the relation between chief executive officer (CEO) personal risk-taking, corporate and total firm risk. We find evidence that CEOs who possess private pilot licenses (our proxy for risk-taking) are associated with riskier firms. Firms led by have higher equity return volatility, beyond amount explained compensation components financially reward risk-taking. trace source of elevated risk to specific policies, including leverage acquisition activity. Abstract Background The blood–brain and blood–tumor barriers (BBB BTB), which restrict the entry of most drugs into brain tumor, respectively, are a significant challenge in treatment glioblastoma. Laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) is minimally invasive surgical technique increasingly used clinically for tumor cell ablation. Recent evidence suggests that LITT might locally disrupt BBB integrity, creating potential therapeutic window opportunity to deliver otherwise brain-impermeant...

VEEV, WEEV, and eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) are emerging infectious diseases in the Americas, they have caused several major outbreaks human horse population during past few decades. Shortly after infection, these viruses can infect CNS, resulting severe long-term neurological deficits or death. Neuroinvasion has been associated with entry into CNS directly from bloodstream; however, underlying molecular mechanisms remained largely unknown. Here, we demonstrate that following...

Abstract Background Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis virus ( VEEV) may enter the central nervous system (CNS) within olfactory sensory neurons (OSN) that originate in nasal cavity after intranasal exposure. While it is known VEEV has evolved several mechanisms to inhibit type I interferon (IFN) signaling infected cells, whether this inhibits virologic control during neuroinvasion along OSN not been studied. Methods We utilized an established murine model of infection with and a repository...

We analyze a direct product of the investment banking process: target firm valuations disclosed in fairness opinions negotiated mergers. On average, acquirer advisers exhibit positive valuation errors that are significantly greater than those advisers. Top-tier produce more accurate lower tier advisers, but we find no relation between accuracy and contingency structure advisory fees. The stock price reactions to merger announcements public disclosure target-sought positively related...

Histidine-rich protein II (HRPII) is secreted by Plasmodium falciparum during the blood stage of malaria infection. High plasma levels HRPII are associated with cerebral malaria, a severe and highly fatal complication malaria. has been shown to induce vascular leakage, hallmark in blood–brain barrier (BBB) animal models. We have discovered an important mechanism for BBB disruption that driven unique features HRPII. By characterizing serum from infected patients produced P. parasites culture,...

This study evaluates the relation between hostile takeovers and 17 takeover laws from 1965 to 2014. Using a hand-collected dataset of largely exogenous legal changes we find that certain laws, such as poison pill business combination have no discernible impact on activity, while others fair price reduced takeovers. We construct Takeover Index higher protection is associated with lower firm value, consistent entrenchment agency costs. However, conditional bid, firms more achieve premiums,...

Summary Innate immune cells are integral to the pathogenesis of several diseases central nervous system (CNS), including multiple sclerosis (MS). Dendritic (DCs) potent CD11c + antigen‐presenting that critical regulators adaptive responses, particularly in autoimmune such as MS. The regulation DC function both periphery and CNS compartment has not been fully elucidated. One limitation studying role DCs is microglia can upregulate during inflammation, making it challenging distinguish bone...
