This study tested a theoretical model concerning religious, passive, and active coping; pain; psychological adjustment among sample of 200 Latinos with arthritis. Respondents reported using high levels religious coping. A path analysis indicated that coping was correlated but not passive Religious directly related to well-being. Passive associated greater pain worse adjustment. The effects on pain, depression, well-being were entirely indirect, mediated by acceptance illness self-efficacy....
Multimorbidity (multiple co-occurring chronic conditions) may be an important contributor to disability and poor health-related quality of life. The functional consequences specific combinations somatic mental health conditions are unclear. Nationally representative prospective cohort study using the National Health Aging Trends Study data Medicare beneficiaries. We included 4,017 participants aged 65 years or older interviewed in 2013 2014. primary outcome was activities daily living...
Objective: The objective of this study was to (a) examine whether the association between obesity and physical functioning among older adults is moderated by activity (PA) (b) test moderating effect varies gender. Method: Data from (aged >60 years) who participated in National Health Nutrition Examination Surveys (2005-2010) were analyzed. Using multivariate logistic regression, we estimated prevalence ratio (PR) functional limitations impairment activities daily living instrumental...
Abstract Background Aging-related comorbidities are more common in people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) compared to without HIV. The gut microbiome may play a role healthy aging; however, this relationship remains unexplored the context of Methods 16S rRNA gene sequencing was conducted on stool from 1409 women (69% HIV; 2304 samples) and 990 men (54% 1008 MACS/WIHS Combined Cohort Study. Associations age diversity, uniqueness, genus-level abundance were examined separately,...
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is the most common Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD). It characterized by dyspnoea and a progressive decline in lung function, which negatively affects life. This study aimed to evaluate Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) IPF patients Latin American countries. Six countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Chile, Mexico, Dominican Republic) enrolled with IPF. They answered Saint George's Respiratory Questionnaire for Pulmonary Fibrosis (SGRQ-I) Hospital...
Participation in regular physical activity (PA) may help maintain bone health as people age. However, most American adults do not engage the recommended minimum levels of PA, and there are racial/ethnic differences PA participation. This study aimed to determine whether current is related density a racially/ethnically diverse sample after controlling for age, sex, body mass index, poverty-income ratio, tobacco use, vitamin D calcium intake, use osteoporosis medications.
Previous research has examined the role of neighborhood social cohesion in physical activity outcomes; however, less is known about this relationship across Latino subgroups. The purpose our study was to examine association between and aerobic leisure-time (LTPA) among adults determine whether these associations differ by subgroup. We used cross-sectional 2013–2014 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) data on Latinos originating from 5 countries/regions (i.e., Puerto Rican,...
Background: Food insecurity refers to the physical, social, and economic inability access secure sufficient, safe nutritious food. has been found be associated with poor health status, obesity, chronic disease. To date, a relationship between food functional limitations not described in of older adults. Methods: We examined 9309 adults ≥60 years old from 2005-2014 National Health Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES). security was categorized as full, marginal, low, very low. Functional...
Objective: To compare estimates of the prevalence mobility and physical function limitations by race ethnicity using data from Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS). Method: The sample comprised 28,854 adults aged ≥60 MEPS (2004-2013). Physical (limitations in basic instrumental activities daily living [ADL/IADL]) were assessed self-report. Results: Non-Hispanic Whites (NHWs) represented majority followed non-Hispanic Blacks (NHBs), Hispanic Other (Other). For limitation, NHBs had highest...
Prior studies have reported the impact of ambient heat exposure on heat-related illnesses and mortality in summer, but few assessed its effect cardiovascular diseases (CVD) morbidity, association difference by demographics season. This study examined how extremely hot days affected CVD-related emergency department (ED) visits among older adults from 2005–2013 New York State. A time-stratified case-crossover design was used to assess heat–CVD summer transitional months (April–May...
Objective: The objective of this study is to (a) examine racial/ethnic differences in trajectories cognitive function and (b) evaluate the role education health behaviors (physical activity [PA] smoking) as mediators rate decline older adults. Method: Data for came from Health Retirement Study ( n = 3,424). Hierarchical linear models were used define trajectory between 2002 2008. Participants classified based on PA non–vigorously active, intermittent vigorously consistently active. Results:...
Background. Obesity and muscle weakness are independently associated with increased risk of physical functional impairment in older adults. It is unknown whether activity (PA) strength combined provide added protection against impairment. This study examines the association between strength, PA, outcomes adults central obesity. Methods. Prevalence odds (PL), ADL, IADL limitation were calculated for 6,388 community dwelling aged ≥ 60 Individuals stratified by sex-specific hand grip tertiles...
The current study evaluated whether there were racial/ethnic differences in the association between childhood adverse experience (ACEs), perceived racial discrimination (PRD), and body mass index (BMI) a sample of middle age older adults. We used data from 2012–2013 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol Related Conditions (N = 11,404; ≥55 years) that included ACE past year experiences with PRD. Generalized linear models stratified by race/ethnicity (non-Hispanic White (NHW; n 7337),...
Background: Chronic stress and/or lifetime traumatic can create a self-reinforcing cycle of unhealthy behaviors, such as overeating and sedentary behavior, that lead to further increases in stress. This study examined the relationship between behavior sample Hispanic/Latino adults (N = 4244) from Hispanic Community Health Study/Study Latinos Sociocultural Ancillary Study. Methods: Stress was measured number ongoing difficulties lasting 6 months or more exposure events. Sedentary by...
Physical activity reduces mobility impairments in elders. We examined the association of physical on risk subjective and objective function adults with at for osteoarthritis (OA).Adults aged ≥ 60 years from longitudinal Osteoarthritis Initiative, a prospective observational study knee OA, were classified by sex-specific quartiles Activity Score Elderly scores. Using linear mixed models, we assessed 6-year data self-reported health, gait speed, Late-Life Function Disability Index (LLFDI)...
Obesity and physical inactivity are independently associated with functional limitations in older adults. The current study examines the impact of activity on odds adults central general obesity.Data from 6279 community-dwelling aged 60 years or more Health Retirement Study 2006 2008 waves were used to calculate prevalence limitation among obese high waist circumference (waist ≥88 cm females ≥102 males) who physically active versus inactive (engaging moderate/vigorous less than once per...
