The aggregation of displaying males in lek-breeding birds is often associated with disruption courtship and mating but effects this on mate choice have not been shown. In a 4-year study Rupicola rupicola Suriname, interference among territorial adult disrupted 31 percent all female visits terminated 32 matings at lek where there were an average 55 males. Disruption rain forest species caused females to modify their patterns, that used intense persistent received disproportionate share...

Approximately one-quarter of all lek-breeding bird species are sexually monomorphic. Understanding the significance, if any, this exception to usual correlation between sexual selection and dimorphism requires detailed data on mating systems both monomorphic dimorphic species. The capuchinbird (Perissocephalus tricolor) is a monomorphic, member cotinga family. I studied social behavior species, compared it with Guianan cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola rupicola), dimorphic, lekking same Male-male...

Abstract: Recent population expansion of Barred Owls ( Strix varia ) into western North America has led to concern that they may compete with and further harm the Northern Spotted Owl S. occidentalis caurina ), which is already listed as threatened under U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA). Because hybridize, there a legal need ESA for forensic identification both species their hybrids. We used mitochondrial control‐region DNA amplified fragment‐length polymorphism (AFLP) analyses assess...

I documented predator attacks and antipredator behavior at four display sites of Guianan Cock-of-the-Rock (Rupicola rupicola) in Suriname from 1980 to 1985. Most observations were made a large lek that averaged 55 territorial males, with supplemental data on groups 1, 2, 6 males. Males the main attacked by species raptors, 1 mammal species, snake species. A total 56 2 kills raptors observed (0.22 attacks/day). Two displaying males Boa constrictor also observed. Male very wary. 832 spooks...

Infanticide, the killing of eggs or nestlings, has been observed eight times during studies communally breeding Mexican jay from 1969-1980. In five six cases in which robber was identified, both and owner victimized nest were same communal unit. remaining case a trespasser neighboring Evidence jays anis suggests that infanticide among birds may be frequent plural-breeding species, more than one pair per unit lay eggs. Infanticide appears to restricted certain social units. Affected units are...

Abstract Africa is home to 23 of the world's 54 hornbill species, including largest members family, ground hornbills. None Africa's hornbills are currently considered be at significant risk extinction by IUCN, and none listed under Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). However, there evidence for serious declines African forest due habitat loss fragmentation, unsustainable exploitation bushmeat. In addition, this paper documents a previously unreported...

ABSTRACT Tropical cyclones pass over or near American Samoa on average about once every 3 years. Because many trees may be stripped of leaves, flowers, and fruit, exert a major impact the feeding ecology nectivorous frugivorous flying foxes. We examined search time in‐tree immediately postcyclone (3–6 weeks) during recovery period (15–16 months after last cyclone). Both Pteropus tonganus P. samoensis increased decreased tree (an indication less food available per tree) passage cyclone Ofa.

Abstract During 4 seasons of study at a large (55 male) lek Guianan cock‐of‐the‐rock ( Rupicola rupicola ) in Suriname, we observed 3906 female courtship visits. Of these, 1171 (30.0%) were disrupted by adult males, 430 (11.0%) yearling and 289 (7.4%) females. This is one the highest levels disruption reported among lek‐breeding birds. Disruption was performed approximately half territorial males each year, spanning full range mating success territory location. Courtship occurs two contexts...

Although vocal learning is widespread among birds, sexual imprinting appears to occur in more avian orders. The four features which LORENZ (1935) considered essentials of have parallels the song literature: these are 1. an early sensitive phase, 2. irreversibility, 3. completion long before manifestation, 4. supraindividuality. These principles still sound under certain experimental conditions, but LORENZ'S ideas require modification light recent data derived from experiments and field...
