A reversible, orientational switching of subphthalocyanine molecules was observed with a scanning tunneling microscope. The asymmetric, polar adsorbed in an epitaxial array on copper (100) surface, initially its axial chlorine atom either upward or downward. After at negative bias the turn upside down, while all switched to orientation positive bias. This flip-flop molecular would lead information density ∼60 Tbit/cm2.

Nucleation growth of a platinum porphyrin derivative adsorbed on Cu (100) surface was observed with scanning tunneling microscope. The molecule attached four di-tert-butylphenyl groups allowed equilibrium between diffusional gas phase and two-dimensional nuclei. To minimize the free energy for nucleation, registry molecules into kink sites resulted in formation nuclei singular, rectangular contours.
