It is unclear whether the current antiviral treatment for chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection results in complete elimination of virus, or small quantities persist. Our study group comprised 17 patients with HCV who had sustained virological response (SVR) after interferon/ribavirin treatment. Serum and peripheral blood mononudear cells were collected 2 to 3 times at 3- 6-month intervals starting 40 109 months (mean, 64.2 +/- 18.5 months) end therapy. In addition, lymphocyte macrophage...

ABSTRACT Patients with chronic hepatitis C are more likely to have significant changes in their physical and mental well-being than patients liver disease of other etiology, virus (HCV) has been occasionally implicated diseases the central nervous system. We analyzed presence HCV negative-strand RNA sequence, which is viral replicative intermediary, autopsy brain tissue samples from six HCV-infected patients. Negative-strand was searched for by a strand-specific Tth -based reverse...

It has been reported that hepatitis C virus (HCV) may be lymphotropic in the setting of human immunodeficiency type 1 (HIV-1) coinfection. The present study was undertaken to determine phenotype lymphoid cells harboring replicating HCV HIV-1-positive subjects. By means highly strand-specific thermostable enzyme Tth-based reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction, presence viral RNA-negative strand sought different subpopulations peripheral blood mononuclear from 10 HIV-positive...

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection often is associated with cognitive dysfunction and depression. HCV sequences replicative forms were detected in autopsy brain tissue cerebrospinal fluid from infected patients, suggesting direct neuroinvasion. However, the phenotype of cells harboring remains unclear. We studied 12 HCV-infected 6 whom coinfected human immunodeficiency virus. Cryostat sections frontal cortex subcortical white matter stained monoclonal antibodies specific for...

The present organ shortage has brought into question the suitability of hepatitis C virus (HCV)-positive grafts. This study reviewed outcome such transplantations in our institution.Twenty-three HCV-positive patients who underwent orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) for end-stage disease with grafts 1992-1995 were studied. Only survived more than 30 days included analysis. Control group 169 HCV-related cirrhosis and received HCV-negative organs.Patients HCV-infected organs had a...

The existence of extrahepatic reservoirs hepatitis C virus (HCV) replication remains highly controversial. We searched for the presence HCV-RNA negative strand in various tissues from eight HCV-infected patients who died acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-related complications. Negative-strand RNA was detected by a Tth-based reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), which optimized sensitivity and specificity on synthetic templates. This assay capable detecting about...

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) sequences were detected in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) 8 of 13 HCV-positive patients. In four patients harboring different strains serum and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), CSF-derived was similar to that found PBMC, which suggests PBMC could carry HCV into the brain.

The pathogenic implications of hepatitis G virus (HGV) infection are still unclear. We searched for the presence HGV RNA and HCV sequences in liver serum samples from 10 patients with chronic disease, 9 whom were coinfected HCV. All livers negative minus strand only six positive strand, albeit at low levels. In striking contrast, was detectable all nine HCV-positive titers ranging 10(2) to 10(8) genomic eq/microg RNA, present but two these patients. However, positive-strand viruses had...
