ABSTRACT Introduction Sensory impairment in Friedreich ataxia (FRDA) is generally accepted as being due to a ganglionopathy. The degree of contribution from axonal pathology remains matter debate. Nerve ultrasound may be able differentiate these processes. Methods cross‐sectional area median, ulnar, tibial, and sural nerves 8 patients with FRDA was compared age‐ gender‐matched healthy controls reference values our population. Results the were significantly larger than those at all upper limb...

Mortality data from Europe and North America show a shorter life expectancy for people with multiple sclerosis (MS). It is not known if similar mortality risk exists in the southern hemisphere. We analysed outcomes of comprehensive New Zealand (NZ) MS cohort, 15 years postrecruitment. All participants nationwide 2006 NZ prevalence study were included compared table population using classic survival analyses, standardised ratios (SMRs) excess death rates (EDRs).Of 2909 participants, 844 (29%)...

Because clozapine and risperidone have been shown to reduce neuroinflammation in humans mice, the Clozapine Risperidone Progressive Multiple Sclerosis (CRISP) trial was conducted determine whether are suitable for progressive multiple sclerosis (pMS).The CRISP (ACTRN12616000178448) a blinded, randomised, placebo-controlled with three parallel arms (n=12/arm). Participants pMS were randomised (100-150 mg/day), (2.0-3.5 mg/day) or placebo 6 months. The primary outcome measures safety (adverse...

Objectives: To determine the incidence of gentamicin vestibulotoxicity with current dosing regimens, and to evaluate feasibility routine video-oculography on all patients given gentamicin.Materials methods: In this prospective study serial horizontal vestibulo-ocular reflex (HVOR) gain measurements were recorded using adult inpatients receiving intravenous gentamicin. The primary outcome was proportion developing impairment their HVOR gain. Results: After exclusions, 42 included in analysis....

Acute bilateral ptosis can be a hallmark of several serious neurological conditions. We present the first case acute near-complete secondary to neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder. suggest that clinicians should consider this disorder among differential diagnosis ptosis, especially if there are other brainstem signs.

Abstract Introduction Structural variants (SVs) of the nebulin gene ( NEB ), including intragenic duplications, deletions, and copy number variation triplicate region, are an established cause recessively inherited nemaline myopathies related neuromuscular disorders. Large deletions have been shown to dominantly distal myopathies. Here we provide overview 35 families with muscle disorders caused by such SVs in . Methods Using custom Comparative Genomic Hybridization arrays, exome sequencing,...

Abstract Chronic graft‐versus‐host disease (cGVHD) complicating allogeneic haemopoietic stem cell transplantation rarely involves the nervous system; oromandibular parafunction has not been previously reported. We describe five patients with cGVHD, presenting bruxism, limitation of mouth opening, jaw locking, pain and masseter hypertrophy. Pathophysiological mechanisms are discussed. Targeted botulinum toxin injections were an effective treatment minimal side‐effects.
