Abstract The Asian monsoon (AM) played an important role in the dynastic history of China, yet it remains unknown whether AM-mediated shifts Chinese societies affect earth surface processes to point exceeding natural variability. Here, we present a dust storm intensity record dating back first unified dynasty China (the Qin Dynasty, 221–207 B.C.E.). Marked increases activity coincided with dynasties large populations during strong AM periods. By contrast, reduced corresponded decreased...
We explore the kinematic mechanisms of active large‐scale folding, based on analysis two adjacent major anticlines in Tian Shan (central Asia) that share an acceleration shortening rate leading to topographic emergence and folded geomorphic surfaces. Their folding are fundamentally different. Yakeng anticline is a gentle pure shear detachment fold with 1200 m well‐constrained history growth beginning at 5.5 Ma order‐of‐magnitude increase from 0.16 ∼1.2–1.6 mm/yr ∼0.16–0.21 Ma. The shape...
Abstract. The aerosol optical properties and their associated radiative effects are derived from sky-radiometer surface solar radiation data collected over the Semi-Arid Climate Environment Observatory of Lanzhou University (SACOL) for period March to May (MAM) 2009. result shows that seasonal mean depth (AOD) at 500 nm in MAM is 0.40. single scattering albedo (SSA) SACOL fluctuates significantly ranging 0.82 0.98. averaged value SSA there background 0.90 MAM, while it smaller (0.87) during...
Abstract Interactions between midlatitude westerlies and the Pamir–Tian Shan mountains significantly impact hydroclimate patterns in Central Asia today, they played an important role driving Asian aridification during Cenozoic. We show that distinct west-east differences were established over late Oligocene (ca. 25 Ma), as recorded by stable oxygen isotopic values of soil carbonates. Our climate simulations these are present when relief is higher than 75% modern elevation (∼3000 m)....
Abstract Arid central Asia (ACA) is one of the most arid regions in mid-latitudes and main potential dust sources for northern hemisphere. The lack situ early Pleistocene loess/dust records from ACA hinders our comprehensive understanding spatio-temporal record aeolian loess accumulation long term climatic changes as a whole. Here, we report results sedimentological, chronological studies loess-palaeosol sequences (LPS) northeastern Iranian Golestan Province (NIGP) western part ACA. Our...
C‐Glycosides are a common feature in numerous bioactive natural compounds and play crucial role as mimics of O/N‐glycosides. Our process for synthesizing β‐C‐acyl glycosides involves reductive cross‐coupling protected glycosyl bromides with the corresponding carboxylic acid, followed by base‐assisted deprotection isomerization. This method is compatible diverse donors, including disaccharides. Consequently, we achieved total synthesis products scleropentaside A B exceptional efficiency....
Abstract Many previous studies have attributed the degradation in Mu Us Desert China to many centuries of human activity. The present study includes analysis proxies activity such as arable land area, population and livestock number, variations precipitation, evaporation, temperature, sand‐driving wind dust events, covering period since 1950. It is demonstrated that desertification vegetation rehabilitation during this were principally related climatic variation, especially correlated winds....
Abstract. This study develops a model for early warning of snow-caused livestock disasters on county basis and proposes method qualitative risk assessment snow at 500 m resolution pastoral areas the Tibetan Plateau (TP). Data used development include remote sensing data, statistical data weather, livestock, social economy, 45 typical disaster cases from 2000 to 2010. The principal component analysis (PCA) approach is choose 7 crucial factors that contribute over 85% information TP. They are...
Abstract The grain-size distribution (GSD) of sediments provides information on sediment provenance, transport processes, and the sedimentary environment. Although a wide range statistical parameters have been applied to summarize GSDs, most are directed at only parts distribution, which limits amount environmental that can be retrieved. Endmember modeling flexible method for unmixing GSDs; however, calculation exact number endmembers geologically meaningful endmember spectra remain...
Abstract Cenozoic sedimentary rocks in the Tajik Basin record history of retreat Paratethys from central Asia, tectonic activity within surrounding Pamir and Tian Shan mountains, Asian aridification. However, there remains a paucity precise chronological constraints on sequences this region. Here we present integrated magnetostratigraphic, detrital zircon monazite U‐Pb geochronologic, apatite fission track thermochronologic data lower Basin. Our results indicate that investigated were...
Abstract Holocene variations in precipitation central and eastern arid Asia (ACA) have been widely investigated, but the pattern western ACA remains unclear. We present records of stable carbon isotope composition bulk organic matter (δ 13 C org ), magnetic parameters, sediment color, from five loess‐paleosol sequences NE Iran, ACA, with aim reconstructing precipitation. The Yellibadragh (YE) section (the thickest among sequences) was selected for optically stimulated luminescence (OSL)...
