Four species of Panochthus (P. greslebini, P. jaguaribensis, oliveira-roxoi, and rochai) have been described from the late Pleistocene northeastern Brazil. rochai considered loosely as synonyms greslebini. This paper reevaluates referred material, diagnostic characters, validity these includes a cladistic analysis 25 caudal tube carapace characters to determine their positioning relative other Panochthus. greslebini jaguaribensis are valid differ by unique combinations characters. Carapace...
The genus Neoglyptatelus Carlini, Vizcaíno and Scillato-Yané has been considered a member of Glyptatelinae, group encompassing the purportedly basal-most glyptodonts. It is up to now represented by two species from Colombia: originalis Scillato-Yané, middle Miocene (a carapace fragment, isolated osteoderms postcranial bones), sincelejanus Villarroel Clavijo, or late partial caudal armor). More scarce material assigned this was recovered Uruguay Brazil. In article, we describe new species,...
The genus Hoplophorus is one of the most distinctive glyptodonts from Quaternary deposits intertropical area Brazil. In this paper, we redescribe cranial and postcranial elements describe some new tarsal belonging to species euphractus caves Minas Gerais state, southern Brazil, in order provide a better diagnosis for genus. The material examined shows several striking, characters relative Neosclerocalyptus, besides those previously reported, reinforcing validity Hoplophorus. On other hand, find...
ABSTRACT Pachyarmatherium is an enigmatic cingulate genus formerly recognized as Dasypodoidea, but tentatively assigned to the poorly known subfamily Glyptatelinae (Glyptodontidae) by later authors. A new species described from late Pleistocene of northeastern Brazil. The material comprises several isolated osteoderms, carapace fragments, and miscellaneous postcranial material. species, brasiliense, differs North American leiseyi in being larger having osteoderms with heptagonal shape, main...
ABSTRACT Here we estimate the body mass of 10 iconic species extinct xenarthrans (cingulates and sloths) from Quaternary Brazil using two sets predictive equations based on postcranial variables. Our results revealed that one these methods is more reliable in estimating evaluated taxa, even though both provide accurate results. The estimates for cingulates indicate they would have been heavier than previously proposed. Among sloths, appear to be within range previous estimates. Compared...
The Quaternary vertebrate paleontology of the Brazilian Intertropical Region is well-known, but there are only a few publications on bone ichnology. In this paper, we analyzed trace fossils in 23 bones Gruna das Três Cobras, Complexo Suíço, and F3 caves, which located Bahia Rio Grande do Norte states, Region. We discovered gnaw marks assigned to Machichnus bite attributed Nihilichnus, as well insect modifications referring single (Cuniculichnus, Gunnellichnus, Karethraichnus, Osteocallis)...
TAXONOMIC AND CHRONOLOGICAL RECORDS.The Sergipe State is included in the Intertropical Region of Brazil (= IRB), and its fauna large (biomass > 44 kg) megamammals 1000 still unknown. This paper reports three taxa for Fazenda Charco locality: Toxodon platensis Owen, Smilodon populator Lund, Pachyarmatherium brasiliense Porpino, Fernicola & Bergqvist; latter constitutes first record this northeastern state Brazil.Ages faunal localities (Fazenda Elefante, Gararu Municipality; São José, Poço...
In this work, the first occurrence of carnivore/scavenger teeth marks on Pleistocene fossil mammals collected in Northeastern Brazil is reported. The fossils are from "Tank Jirau", Itapipoca municipality, Ceará State, and housed Museu de Pré-história Itapipoca. The observed features, which assigned to a largesized canid, correspond scratches mostly perpendicular long axis bone, occurring mainly ribs, vertebrae, tibiae ulnae.Based size scratches, geographical distribution dietary habits canids...

Arthritic lesions have been frequently diagnosed in the fossil record, with spondyloarthropathy (a type of erosive and pan-mammalian arthritis) being one most common types described to date for mammals, though not restricted this group. Here, we identify bones from late Pleistocene Brazil assignable a large glyptodont individual. Bone erosions peripheral joints (viz., ulna, radius, left femur tibiae-fibulae) associated osteosclerosis allow diagnosis spondyloarthropathy. The presence...
Nothrotherium maquinense, Ahytherium aureum and Australonyx aquae are ground sloths endemic of the late Pleistocene Brazilian Intertropical Region for which, as opposed to other xenarthrans such megatheriid glyptodonts, no information regarding pathological conditions is available. Herein, we describe, based on an anatomopathological examination, four types lesions N. maquinense (spondyloarthropathy, Schmorl's node, vertebral trauma unspecific infection) one lesion A. (osteochondritis...
Studies on paleopathological alterations in fossil vertebrates, including damages caused by infections and ectoparasites, are important because they potential sources of paleoecological information. Analyzing exoskeleton material (isolated osteoderms, carapace caudal tube fragments) from cingulates the Brazilian Quaternary Megafauna, we identified that were attributed to attacks fleas dermic infections. The former compatible with produced one species flea genus Tunga, which generates...
During the Late Pleistocene, several possibly endemic cingulate species, known mostly from isolated osteoderms, carapace fragments, and caudal tubes, coexisted in Brazilian Intertropical Region. Here, we describe osteoderm microstructure of Pachyarmatherium brasiliense, as well glyptodonts Panochthus greslebini, jaguaribensis Glyptotherium sp., order to provide additional species-diagnostic characters shed light on their evolutionary relationships.Pachyarmatherium brasiliense lacks derived...
We performed a macroscopic study on six species of Pleistocene sloths from the Brazilian Intertropical Region (BIR) including Valgipes bucklandi, Catonyx cuvieri, Mylodonopsis ibseni, Glossotherium sp., Ocnotherium giganteum and Eremotherium laurillardi compared results with previous investigation Nothrotherium maquinense Ahytherium aureum. Differential diagnostic analysis revealed varieties musculoskeletal diseases: Calcium Pyrosphosphate Deposition Disease (CPPD), Spondyloarthropathy...
