The distribution of trace ore elements in different paragenetic stages pyrite has been documented for the first time sub-seafloor actively-forming TAG massive sulfide deposit. Trace element distributions have determined by in-situ laser ablation inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) formed at mineralization, and temperatures constrained previously published fluid inclusion analyses. data reveal a strong dependence on stage, with distinct low- high-temperature enrichments....
Abstract Deep-seafloor organisms consume oxygen, which can be measured by in situ benthic chamber experiments. Here we report such experiments at the polymetallic nodule-covered abyssal seafloor Pacific Ocean oxygen increased over two days to more than three times background concentration, from ex incubations attribute nodules. Given high voltage potentials (up 0.95 V) on nodule surfaces, hypothesize that seawater electrolysis may contribute this dark production.
Gold colloids occur in black smoker fluids from the Niua South hydrothermal vent field, Lau Basin (South Pacific Ocean), confirming long-standing hypothesis that gold may undergo colloidal transport fluids. Six vents, varying temperature 250 °C to 325 °C, were sampled; was boiling at time of sampling and diffusely venting. Native particles ranging <50 nm 2 µm identified 4 fluid samples also observed precipitate on sampler during collection vent. Total concentrations (dissolved particulate)...
Conventional wisdom holds that aqueous solutions are the only non-magmatic fluids capable of concentrating metals in Earth's crust. The role hydrocarbons metal concentration is relegated to providing geochemical barriers at which reduced and immobilised.Liquid hydrocarbons, however, also known be able carry appreciable concentrations metals, travel considerable distances. Here we report results an experimental determination bulk solubilities Au, Zn, U a variety crude oils temperatures up 300...
Hydrothermal fluids on the modern seafloor are important carriers of base and precious metals in a wide range volcanic tectonic settings. The concentrations distribution, especially gold silver, associated massive sulfide (SMS) deposits strongly influenced by variable source rocks, fluid chemistry, precipitation mechanisms. Compositional data 130 SMS around world show large silver grades, part reflecting strong buffering hydrothermal their host rocks. Geochemical reaction-path modeling shows...
The Black Reef Formation is a laterally extensive sedimentary succession at the base of Transvaal Supergroup. quartz-pebble conglomerates host erratic concentrations gold and uranium; however, in areas that are located spatially above uranium-bearing reefs Witwatersrand Supergroup, can reach ore-grade. Although depositional environment was similar to processes lead high uranium were quite different. experienced intense, post-depositional hydrothermal alteration by circulating aqueous...
Abstract We have investigated a locality very well known to mineral collectors, the Yates U-Th prospect near Otter Lake, Québec. There, dikes of orange pink calcite enclose euhedral prisms fluorapatite, locally aligned. Early investigators pointed out importance micro-inclusions in prisms. describe and image two polished sections fluorapatite prisms, one them with millimetric globule similar that matrix. interpret been an inclusion melt trapped during growth. Micro-globules disseminated are...
There is a close spatial relation between high-grade gold mineralization in the Witwatersrand basin and carbonaceous nodules, veins seams. Hydrocarbons thus may well have been essential ore genesis. We sampled four major gold-, uranium- hydrocarbon-bearing horizons, namely Carbon Leader, Vaal, B Black reefs, to determine role of hydrocarbons accumulation hydrothermal fixation gold. Our multipronged approach included high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (SEM, TEM),...
Mineral precipitation in the seawater-dominated Reykjanes geothermal system on Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Iceland is caused by abrupt, artificially induced, pressure and temperature changes as deep high-temperature liquids are drawn from reservoir rocks up through wells. Sulfide scales within these wells represent a complete profile of mineral seafloor hydrothermal system, to low-temperature silica-rich surface discharge. have formed under range conditions high pressures temperatures at depth (>2...
Abstract High‐temperature hydrothermal venting has been discovered on all modern mid‐ocean ridges at spreading rates. Although significant strides have made in understanding the underlying processes that shape such systems, several first‐order discrepancies between model predictions and observations remain. One key paradox is numerical experiments consistently show entrainment of cold ambient seawater shallow high permeability ocean crust causing a temperature drop difficult to reconcile...
The formation of impressive Quaternary terrace sequences along many mid to high latitudinal rivers is the consequence surface uplift and a strong climate related impact on fluvial system. Glacial periglacial processes may amplify events aggradation thereby providing clear stratigraphic markers in record. Terrace are essential landforms continental basins even though local subsidence counteract regional trend. We explore these opposing lithospheric forces, vs. normal faulting perialpine...
River terraces form as a response to regional uplift and climatic fluctuations (Bridgland & Westaway, 2008). While the intensity of oscillations controls trends aggradation incision, it is that determines amplitude vertical spacing between consecutive (Demoulin et al., 2017). Glacial periglacial processes may amplify these providing distinct stratigraphic markers on climate tectonic in fluvial terrace record. Over several glacial-interglacial cycles, can complex sequences often...
Abstract The Lautenthal sphalerite-galena vein deposit is part of the world-class Upper Harz Pb-Zn-Ag district in uplift block Paleozoic Variscan fold belt Germany. Its sphalerite-dominated mineral association was studied using bulk-ore chemistry, electron probe microanalysis, and laser ablation-ICP-mass spectrometry. Gallium locally In are main high-tech-relevant trace elements hosted by sphalerite, with up to 150 ppm Ga 380 hand-picked sphalerite samples (mean In/Zn, 0.70 × 10 −3 ). Ore...

Abstract Large expanses of granulite-facies white marble occur in the Central Metasedimentary Belt Grenville orogen western Quebec and contiguous areas eastern Ontario New York. Locally, rock is transformed into “varicolored” marble, ranging from pink, orange, yellow, green, gray to blue some cases closely juxtaposed. We have dissected specimens three target Quebec. A powerful analytical workflow including high-resolution ZEISS Atlas 5 large-area imaging was employed combination with...
