After a short historical outline of the development ideas on compaction clays and shales it is shown that exponential porosity-depth dependence compacted expressed by Athy's law can be derived using standard methods statistical physics. A general technique is developed to retrieve the fractal dimension of self-similar soils through microwave (radar) scattering. The based on a mathematical model relating dimensions georadargram that scattering structure. Clear and different signatures have been observed over four geosystems (soils sediments) compared in this work.
Using a combination of laboratory experiments and computer simulation we show that microwaves reflected from transmitted through soil have fractal dimension correlated to the soil's hierarchic permittivity network.
