MRSA の院内伝播を防止するには，サーベイランスが重要であり，感染源の特定や感染経路の究明には分子疫学解析法 （PFGE 法） が用いられてきた．しかし本法は処理時間が長く煩雑なことから，日常業務への導入は困難であった．今回，短時間で再現性良く測定可能な POT 法による分子疫学解析キットが開発されたため，2010 年入院患者から新規に検出された 192 例について解析を行い，院内伝播制御における有用性を検討した． これまで サーベイランスに用いてきた検出タイミングによる方法では 2010 年における院内伝播を疑う症例は 118 例であった．しかし 法を導入し，場所 （病棟，移動情報） と時間的背景 （入院日，検体採取日） を考慮することで，院内伝播が強く疑われる患者 38 例の抽出が可能であった．この結果を臨床現場に示すことで，感染対策室は確信を持って院内伝播の実態を示すことができた．POT 法は特殊な解析ソフトも必要なく，泳動後のバンドの有無をもとに簡単に数値化できることから，菌株間の比較やデータ管理に極めて有用であった．
