Abstract Hydration of ultramafic rock during the geologic process serpentinization can generate reduced substrates that microorganisms may use to fuel their carbon and energy metabolisms. However, serpentinizing environments also place multiple constraints on microbial life by generating highly hyperalkaline waters are limited in dissolved inorganic carbon. To better understand how persists under these conditions, we performed geochemical measurements from a environment subjected planktonic...

Abstract The Oman Drilling Project established an “Active Alteration” multi‐borehole observatory in peridotites undergoing low‐temperature serpentinization the Samail Ophiolite. highly serpentinized rocks are contact with strongly reducing fluids. Distinct hydrological regimes, governed by differences rock porosity and fracture density, give rise to steep redox (Eh +200 −750 mV) pH (pH range 8.5–11.2) gradients within 300–400 m deep boreholes. serpentinites fluids host active subsurface...

Little is known of acetogens in contemporary serpentinizing systems, despite widely supported theories that serpentinite-hosted environments the first life on Earth via acetogenesis. To address this knowledge gap, genome-resolved metagenomics was applied to subsurface fracture water communities from an area active serpentinization Samail Ophiolite, Sultanate Oman. Two deeply branching putative bacterial acetogen types were identified belonging Acetothermia (hereafter, I and II) exhibited...

Abstract Metagenome assembled genomes (MAGs) and single amplified (SAGs) affiliated with two distinct Methanobacterium lineages were recovered from subsurface fracture waters of the Samail Ophiolite, Sultanate Oman. Lineage Type I was abundant in circumneutral pH, whereas lineage II hydrogen rich, hyperalkaline waters. encoded proteins to couple oxidation CO2 reduction, typical hydrogenotrophic methanogens. Surprisingly, II, which branched lineage, lacked homologs key oxidative...

Serpentinization can generate highly reduced fluids replete with hydrogen (H2) and methane (CH4), potent reductants capable of driving microbial methanogenesis methanotrophy, respectively. However, CH4 in serpentinized waters is thought to be primarily abiogenic, raising key questions about the relative importance methanogens methanotrophs production consumption these systems. Herein, we apply molecular approaches examine functional capability activity cycling serpentinization-impacted...

A 49-year-old man with a benign type of cystinosis exhibited crystalline deposits limited to the cornea and conjunctiva both eyes. These could be identified as cystine by histological, chromatographic, roentgenographic methods. The patient also suffered from syringomyelia. lamellar keratoplasty on left, formerly injured eye has been kept clear for 17 months shows practically no deposits. Similar alterations in other members family excluded.
