Despite the wide amount of scientific contributions published on alien plant species, their diffusion dynamics, and interactions with native taxa, it is increasingly difficult to slow down spreading negative impact habitats. Last recent years, in fact, a sharp rise number new taxa introduced Italy Europe has been recorded. The aim this work investigate most Italian territory order verify whether alarming trend still underway. Specimen collections and/or observations plants have performed as...
Given the high number of non-native plants that are being introduced worldwide and time required to process formal pest risk analyses, a framework for prioritization management actions is urgently required. We therefore propose replicable standardized (eradication, control monitoring) invasive plants, combining expert knowledge, current future climatic suitability estimated by species distribution models (SDMs), clustering ordination techniques. Based on consultation using Italy as case...
We present ReSurveyDunes — the first database of Italian coastal dune vegetation plots, developed through a collaborative network scientists. This paper describes scope initiative, provides an overview available data, and highlights its key features, research applications, future potential. currently comprises 972 plots distributed across 11 regions (Abruzzo, Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Emilia-Romagna, Lazio, Molise, Sardinia, Sicily, Tuscany, Veneto). The original were surveyed between...
The tradition of floristic studies in Italy has made it possible to obtain a good knowledge plant diversity both on national and regional scale. However, the lack for some areas, advances systematics human activities related globalization, highlight need further aimed at improving knowledge. In this paper, based fieldwork herbaria literature surveys, we update Italian vascular flora analyze similarities between administrative regions. Four taxa, all exotic, were recorded first time Europe....
Abstract An updated checklist of the Calabrian alien vascular flora is presented. By way field, bibliographic, and herbarium research, we recorded 382 taxa (representing almost 14% all regional flora), which 371 are angiosperms, nine gymnosperms, two ferns. In relation to state spread, majority species casual (207 taxa; 54%), followed by naturalized (127; 33%) invasive (48; 13%), these last include four on list Union Concern, sensu Regulation (EU) no. 1143/2014. The most represented families...
A single paragraph of about 200 words maximum. For research articles, abstracts should give a pertinent overview the work. We strongly encourage authors to use following style structured abstracts, but without headings: (1) Background: Place question addressed in broad context and highlight purpose study; (2) Methods: briefly describe main methods or treatments applied; (3) Results: summarize article’s findings; (4) Conclusions: indicate conclusions interpretations. The abstract be an...
Knowledge on alien species is needed nowadays to protect natural habitats and prevent ecological damage. The presence of new plant in Italy increasing every day. Calabria, its southernmost region, not yet well known with regard this aspect. Thanks fieldwork, sampling, observing many exotic plants here, we report data 34 taxa. In particular, found three taxa for Europe (Cascabela thevetia, Ipomoea setosa subsp. pavonii, Tecoma stans), (Brugmansia aurea, Narcissus ‘Cotinga’, ‘Erlicheer’), one...

A great deal of ethnobotanical knowledge, passed down from generation to by oral tradition, is still preserved in the Mediterranean basin. Over years, efforts have been made collect this information avoid losing heritage. This work a contribution towards knowledge Calabria (southern Italy) through survey on Tyrrhenian side Aspromonte Massif metropolitan city Reggio Calabria, an area that has little studied point view. For purpose, several semi-structured interviews were conducted with...

Despite the importance for scientific and conservation purposes, knowledge of Italian territory is far from exhaustive. New chorological data 87 vascular taxa regarding central-southern part Italy its two main islands (Sicilia Sardegna) are presented. Among these taxa, Epilobium nummularifolium, Metrosideros excelsa, Salvinia minima recorded as casual aliens first time in Europe (excluding Azores Madeira M. excelsa), while Cyclamen balearicum Polygala rupestris reported confirmed native...
New data concerning the distribution of 21 non-native vascular species for Calabria (southern Italy) are presented. Agave filifera is reported first time in Europe (Canary Islands excluded), while Leucaena leucocephala subsp. glabrata and Senna corymbosa indicated continental Italy. Saccharum biflorum confirmed Italian Peninsula, Physalis angulata a new exotic plant southern Moreover sixteen other time, or with an updated naturalization status Calabria.
In this paper, based on fieldwork and herbaria surveys, new data concerning the presence of 32 native alien vascular species for Sicily (Italy) are provided. Among species, occurrence following taxa is reported first time or confirmed after many decades non-observation: Aira multiculmis, Arum maculatum, Carex flacca subsp. flacca, Mentha longifolia, Oxybasis chenopodioides, Najas minor Xiphion junceum. Furthermore, we document three (Cornus mas, Juncus foliosus Limonium avei) that, despite...
Background: In many rural areas of the Mediterranean, spontaneous plants play an essential role in everyday sustenance. However, knowledge use is gradually disappearing owing to socioeconomic changes that do not allow enhancement ethnobotanical traditions. The aim this work was collect, preserve, and enhance Graecanic Area Reggio Calabria (Southern Italy), a marginal area rich traditions are at risk extinction. Methods: Data related botanical species known used by populations were collected...
Human activities and climate change are the main factors causing habitat loss, jeopardising survival of many species, especially those with limited range, such as endemic species. Recently, species distribution models (SDMs) have been used in conservation biology to assess their extinction risk, environmental dynamics, potential distribution. This study analyses potential, current future range Salvia ceratophylloides Ard., an perennial Lamiaceae family that occurs exclusively a suburban area...

Abstract The 92/43/EEC Habitats Directive is the main European Union legal tool concerning nature conservation. habitat types listed in Annex I to are phytosociology-based. It widely acknowledged that phytosociological analysis a crucial approach for habitats characterization and monitoring their conservation status. Based on bibliographic investigations new field survey campaigns, list of neglected by here presented described southern Italy. In this paper, 8 13 subtypes proposed. For each...
Nitrophilous communities dominated by Glebionis coronaria and discolor in the European Mediterranean area were studied. The nomenclature was corrected according to current taxonomy, following International Code of Phytosociological Nomenclature (ICPN). statistical analysis revealed six new associations one subassociation, with four Spain, Greece, Italy. Additionally, a subassociation high relevance due its endemic character identified. These grasslands exhibit requirements for organic matter...

The effects of herbivorous insects on a plant population are not always well tolerated. This is especially true if the actions directed toward rare species. Salvia ceratophylloides Ard. endemism southern Italy. Observations plants in situ revealed that many them were under severe stress and did produce seeds. Therefore, to find out which factors affect reproductive activity as whole, an observational study was carried out. We found bottom-up top-down health reproduction associated with...
