The objective of this study is to provide an updated conservation status all liverworts and hornworts in the Italian territory, evaluated according IUCN's Guidelines for Application IUCN Red List Criteria at Regional Level. Overall, 27.4% taxa assessed are assigned a risk category and, therefore, considered threatened Italy. Four as Extinct, two one hornwort Possibly Extinct regional level. Moreover, further 9.8% Near Threatened, 10.8% Data Deficient 49.7% Least Concern. Most threats...
Abstract Background and Aims Herbaria are powerful sources of data material nowadays that can be used for analyses other than taxonomic purposes. Improved techniques DNA extraction from old herbarium specimens combined with modern relatively cheap genomic tools, allow the reassessment identity important potential consequences on species conservation status. In this study, we a approach applied to type mid-19th century elucidate Armeria arcuata correctly identify living plant (code:...

Scientific research is the main driver to push forward and disseminate botanical knowledge. Despite many institutions having this fundamental aim as a core activity, of them do not have complete set facilities, expertise, staff, resources cover all steps involved in study, management, conservation, popularization plant diversity. Accordingly, we propose workflow formalizing cooperation between garden center, focused on study endemic species. Specifically, was implemented PLANTSEED Lab...
In this contribution, new data concerning the distribution of native vascular flora in Italy are presented. It includes records, confirmations, and exclusions to Italian administrative regions for taxa genera Anacyclus , Anthyllis Bolboschoenus Catapodium Festuca Hordeum Lavandula Ophrys Pseudopodospermum Rosa Sorbus Spergula . Nomenclatural updates, published elsewhere, corrigenda provided as Suppl. material 1.
A contribution to the nomenclature of genus Armeria is presented. alpina, A. gracilis, macropoda, plantaginea, Statice nebrodensis, S. and pungens, recorded for Italy, are typified here based on specimens deposited at B, G, MA, NAP, plus an illustration by Allioni. The current application these names confirmed in most cases, except which shown be a heterotypic synonym Alpine endemic arenaria subsp. praecox, not western Mediterranean alliacea, as previously thought. Accordingly, latter...

Three subspecies of Armeria arenaria are reported from Italy, two which considered endemic to the Apennines. The taxonomic value these taxa (A. subsp. marginata and A. apennina) is unclear. Moreover, relationships between praecox Northern Italian populations-currently ascribed arenaria-have never been addressed. Accordingly, we used an integrated approach, including morphometry, seed morpho-colorimetry, karyology, molecular systematics (psbA-trnH, trnQ-rps16, trnF-trnL, trnL-rpl32, ITS...
Sardinia and Corsica are two Mediterranean islands where the genus Armeria is represented by 11 taxa, 10 out of which endemic. An integrative approach, using molecular phylogeny, karyology, seed plant morphometry was used to resolve complex taxonomy systematics in this group. We found that several taxa no longer supported newly produced data. Accordingly, we describe a new taxonomic hypothesis only considers five species: leucocephala A. soleirolii, endemic Corsica, morisii, sardoa,...
Summary Plant morphology is crucial in defining and circumscribing the plant diversity around us. Statistically speaking, study of done using morphometry, that context systematics used to verify hypotheses morphological independence between taxa. Nevertheless, methods currently analyse data do not match with conceptual model behind species circumscription on grounds. Here we 1) provide a step-by-step guide perform linear morphometric analyses 2) develop new conceptual, statistical,...
The inventory of the taxa collected during annual field trip working group for Floristics, Systematics and Evolution Italian Botanical Society is reported. was held in 2019 along Sillaro, Santerno, Senio high valleys located Toscana (central Italy). flora documented studied area amounts to 492 specific subspecific (including five hybrids), belonging 254 genera 77 families. Bromopsis caprina , Ophrys appennina O. classica Polygala flavescens subsp. flavescens, Pulmonaria vallarsae apennina...

Badlands are peculiar geomorphological formations shaping landscapes of high ecological and cultural value. In the last decades, land reclamation for agricultural purposes ceasing traditional use, such as sheep grazing, led to their decline in extent many areas. To quantify changes badland-related plant communities, we resurveyed badland vegetation a site Crete Senesi (Siena, central Italy) after 16 years (2006-2022), using 48 quasi-permanent plots by means uni multivariate analysis...

Cross-taxon congruence, i.e., using certain taxonomic groups as surrogates for others, is receiving growing interest since it may allow decreasing efforts in biodiversity studies. In this work, we investigated the patterns of cross-taxon congruence species richness and composition between communities bryophytes, lichens, vascular plants different biancana grasslands a Special Area Conservation (SAC) central Italy. We recorded presence abundance 16 plots 1 × m size analyzed data Procrustes...
Within a practical course of cytotaxonomy organized in Pisa (Italy) on February 2024 by the Group for Floristics, Systematics and Evolution Italian Botanical Society, we tested whether using image analysis softwares possible biases are still introduced different observers. We conclude that observer bias selectively applies possibly overestimating length short arms karyotype. As consequence, parameters most sensitive to these errors CV CI CL , less degree M CA THL. To achieve more stable...
Within a practical course of cytotaxonomy organized in Pisa (Italy) on February 2024 by the Group for Floristics, Systematics and Evolution Italian Botanical Society, we tested whether relevant differences karyotype asymmetry structure occur four tetraploid European taxa from Paeonia sect. (P. mascula subsp. russoi, P. officinalis huthii, italica, peregrina ). Our results point towards homogeneous among studied species, with no statistically significant difference high overlap variation...
The chromosome numbers for seven Italian endemic taxa of Armeria (Plumbaginaceae) are here presented, including three species ( aspromontana , A. garganica and macropoda ) which data reported the first time. Overall, this study confirms diploid status chromosomal stability .
