The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety measurements, but the nature its main ingredients, dark matter and energy, remains unknown. is medium-class mission in Cosmic Vision 2015--2025 programme European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well near-infrared imaging spectroscopy, over about 14\,000\,deg$^2$ extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing clustering measurements probe structure formation half age...
Abstract The recent launch of low Earth orbit satellite constellations is creating a growing threat for astronomical observations with ground-based telescopes 1–10 that has alarmed the community 11–16 . Observations affected by artificial satellites can become unusable scientific research, wasting fraction research budget on costly infrastructures and mitigation efforts. Here we report first measurements, to our knowledge, contamination from made Hubble Space Telescope. With help volunteers...
Zoobot is a Python package for measuring the detailed appearance of galaxies in telescope images using deep learning.Zoobot aimed at astronomers who want to solve galaxy image task such as finding merging or counting spiral arms.Astronomers can use adapt (finetune) pretrained learning models their task. These finetuned perform better and require far fewer new labels than training from scratch (Walmsley, Slijepcevic, et al., 2022).
The Euclid mission is expected to image millions of galaxies at high resolution, providing an extensive dataset with which study galaxy evolution. Because morphology both a fundamental parameter and one that hard determine for large samples, we investigate the application deep learning in predicting detailed morphologies using Zoobot , convolutional neural network pretrained 450 000 from Galaxy Zoo project. We adapted use emulated images generated based on Hubble Space Telescope COSMOS...
Abstract Rock abundances on the Moon represent both an opportunity to understand history of surface and regolith a hazard lander missions. While rock erasure by meteoroid bombardment is known modify size˗frequency distributions, interplay between exposure impact cratering, resulting net abundance, not known. Leveraging coupling modeling optical imagery from lunar orbit, we calculate new lifetimes that consider specific shattering energy fragments produced boulder shattering. We find...
IntroductionImpact craters on the lunar surface are surrounded by boulders, rock fragments larger than 25.6 cm [1], which formed during ejecta emplacement. These boulders exposed and thus subject to meteoroid bombardment leading two main erosional effects: abrasion shattering [2]. Their abundance decreases with time producing regolith. By analyzing boulder fields, key information regolith formation evolution, as well about subsurface rockiness of geologic units rock-excavating can be...
We report on the outcomes of several years study focused understanding nature and evolution regolith airless surfaces, particularly Moon, with unique approach using lunar rocks as probe surface processes. Orbital in situ imaging Moon reveal boulders scattered across surface. These preserve chemistry, mineralogy petrology crust its evolution. Upon exposure to surface, they are affected by processes thus inform formation [e.g., Hörz et al., 2020]. Furthermore, influence such dust...
