Does the presence of immigrants in one's neighborhood affect voting for far right-wing parties? We study case Freedom Party Austria (FPÖ) that, under leadership Jörg Haider, increased its vote share from less than 5% early 1980s to 27% by end 1990s and continued attract more 20% voters 2013 national election. find that inflow into a community has significant impact on increase community's FPÖ, explaining roughly tenth regional variation changes. Our results suggest worry about adverse labor...
Abstract Recent literature on tax evasion emphasizes the importance of moral considerations to explain compliance behavior. As a consequence scholars aim identify factors that shape this so-called morale. However, causal link between morale and actual behavior is not established yet. Exploiting exogenous variation in – given by inherited part American-born from their ancestors country origin our Two-Stage Least Square Estimation provides first evidence effect size underground production.
SUMMARY This paper explores individual motives for volunteering. The analysis is based on the interpretation of volunteering as a consumption good (consumption model) or mean to increase individual's own human capital (investment model). We present an econometric framework taking into account self selection and simultaneity between decision determination income in order test these two models identify underlying motives. find strong statistical evidence investment model with highly robust...
We study the effectiveness of intrahousehold insurance among married couples when husband loses his job due to a mass layoff or plant closure. Empirical results based on Austrian administrative data show that husbands suffer persistent employment and earnings losses, while wives’ labor supply increases moderately extensive margin responses. Wives’ gains recover only tiny fraction household income loss, in short-term, public transfers taxes are more important form insurance. presence children...
Abstract Social distancing is important to slow the community spread of infectious disease, but it creates enormous economic and social cost. Thus, quantify benefits different measures. We study ban mass gatherings, an intervention with comparably low exploit exogenous variation in number National Basketball Association Hockey League games, which arises due leagues' predetermined schedules, sudden suspension 2019–2020 seasons. find that, among clusters counties that are adjacent sports...
Does the supply of a welfare state create its own demand? Many economic scholars studying arrangements refer to Say's law and insinuate self-destructive state. However, little is known about empirical validity these assumptions hypotheses. We study dynamic effect different on benefit fraud. In particular, we analyze impact respective social norm, i.e. morale. It turns out that high level public expenditures unemployment rate are associated with small positive (or no) immediate morale, which...
Since the 1970s almost all US states have introduced a form of joint custody after divorce. I analyze causal effect these law reforms on different family outcomes. My identification strategy exploits timing across states. Estimations based state panel data suggest that introduction led to an increase in marriage rates, overall fertility (including shift from nonmarital marital fertility), and divorce rates for older couples. Accordingly, female labor market participation decreased. Further,...
Using Austrian and Danish administrative data, we examine the impacts of parenthood on mental health. Parenthood imposes a greater health burden mothers than fathers. It creates long-run gender gap in antidepressant prescriptions about 93.2% (Austria) 64.8% (Denmark). These penalties are unlikely to reflect differential help-seeking behavior across sexes or postpartum depression. Instead, they related mothers’ higher investments childcare: Mothers who take extended maternity leave...

Summary We show that changes in assortative mating patterns along the dimensions of age, ethnicity, religion and education are not responsible for increasing marital instability over last four decades Austria. Without rise age at marriage, divorce rates would be considerably higher. Immigration secularization, resulting supply spouses with diverse ethnicity religious denominations had no overall effect on rates. Countervailing effects—in line theoretical predictions–offset each other. The...
Summary Using a matched insurant–general practitioner panel data set, we estimate the effect of general health‐screening program on individuals' health status and health‐care cost. To account for selection into treatment, use regional variation in intensity exposure to supply‐determined screening recommendations as an instrumental variable. We find that participation increases inpatient outpatient costs up 2 years after treatment substantially. In medium run, cost savings sector, whereas...

We evaluate the effect of an Austrian parental leave extension from child's first to its second birthday on long-term child outcomes. Exploiting a sharp cutoff-based discontinuity in eligibility for extended leave, we find that longer improves average health outcomes, but has no labor market When accounting counterfactual mode care, significant gains all outcomes children whom reform most likely induced replacement informal childcare with maternal care. This highlights importance scenario...

Little is known about the response behavior of parents whose children are ex-posed to an early-life shock. We interpret prenatal exposure Austrian 1986 cohort radioactive fallout from Chernobyl accident as a negative hu-man capital shock and examine their parents' behavior. To identify causal effects, we can rely on exogenous variation in (over time and) between communities due geographic differences precipitation at accident. Our design-based approach (which ac-counts for culling effects)...
