Abstract With increasingly intense marine heatwaves affecting nearshore regions, foundation species are coming under increasing stress. To better understand their impacts, we examine responses of critical, habitat-forming (macroalgae, seagrass, corals) to in 1322 shallow coastal areas located across 85 ecoregions. We find compelling evidence that intense, summer play a significant role the decline globally. Critically, detrimental effects increase towards warm-range edges and over time. also...

AbstractConsiderable uncertainties remain about magnitude and character, if not general direction of anthropogenic climate change. Global mean temperature could increase by 1.5–4.5°C or more over historic levels, extreme weather events—drought, storms, flooding—are likely to greatly in frequency. Although ecologists foresters agree that the practice forestry will be transformed under change, these compound challenge achieving sustainable, adaptive forest management. In this aritcle, we (i)...

Abstract Glucocerebroside levels were measured in the brains of patients with neuronopathic forms (types 2 and 3) Gaucher disease compared to those obtained from control brain. Nine separate brain regions (frontal, temporal, occipital, cerebellar cortices; thalamus; corpus striatum; pons; medulla; dentate nuclei) analyzed. In all studied, greatest glucocerebroside accumulation occurred within occipital cortex, lesser amounts temporal frontal areas. The striatum, thalamus had mildly increased...

There is growing international agreement that intensive silviculture will play a major role in meeting future demand for wood and fibre worldwide. In Canada, however, extensive forest management continues to be the dominant paradigm. Driven by low growth rates primary forests consequent long rotations, current policies support only basic management, with little or no silvicultural intervention between stand initiation final harvests. By contrast, native conifers hybrid poplars (Populus spp.)...
