Lignin is a byproduct of agricultural industries and only has limited applications. In this study, lignin was investigated for use in sustainable biopolymeric packaging film. Alkali (AL) lignosulfonate (LSS) were added to enzymatically modified soy protein isolate (SPI) film with different concentrations the goal improvement physical functional properties. A radical scavenging activity test revealed that films containing LSS had values 28 6% higher than control AL-based films, respectively;...
To better evaluate potential uses for grape pomace (GP) waste, a comprehensive chemical composition analysis of GP in Virginia was conducted. Eight commercial white and red samples (cv. Viognier, Vidal Blanc, Niagara, Petit Manseng, Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Chambourcin) obtained from different wineries Virginia, USA were used. For extractives, GPs contained 2.89%–4.66% titratable acids, 4.32%–6.60% ash, 4.62%–12.5% lipids with linoleic acid being the predominant (59.0%–70.9%) fatty...
Grape pomace (GP) is a major solid waste resulting from the wine industry. GP rich in structural carbohydrates, lignin, and other components such as oil polyphenols, products with potential value. One of challenges to valorization lack technology fully utilize minimize generation. To overcome this challenge, we developed novel, integrated process each component for production oil, biochemicals (acetone, butanol, ethanol; ABE). was first subjected pressurized liquid extraction recover grape...
A novel competitive 1,1′-oxalyldiimidazole (ODI) chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay (CLEIA) was developed as a method for rapid and simple screening of melamine in milk. Fat existing milk acts an inhibitor the binding interaction anti-melamine presence melamine-conjugated horseradish peroxidase. Thus, calibration curve sensitivity ODI CLEIA quantification fat free were wider better than those containing fat. However, centrifuge is not good removing because portion also removed with The...
Abstract Antioxidant activity of enzymatically modified soybean protein film with two different forms added lignin (alkali and lignosulfonate) was investigated using stimulated food systems involving direct indirect contact oil fish fatty acid ethyl ester (FAEE). For the system, control lignin‐doped films were to vials which stored at dark under 40 °C whereas for indirect, used cover oil‐containing glass standard commercial lighting conditions. Autoxidation samples in system determined by...
Antimicrobial packaging reduces the extent of microbial contamination; however, conventional antimicrobial packaging, which releases agents into food, may experience rapid agent depletion and can adversely affect food flavors. In this study, a novel photocatalytic nanofiber film embedded with Rose Bengal (RB) dye that generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) in visible light was designed for inactivating microorganisms. The film's properties under various intensities exposure times were...
Abstract The effects of transglutaminase on soy protein isolate (SPI) film forming solution and films were investigated by rheological behavior physicochemical properties based different manufacturing conditions (enzyme treatments, enzyme incubation times, denaturation temperatures). Enzymatic crosslinking reaction changes in molecular weight distribution confirmed viscosity measurement SDS‐PAGE, respectively, compared to 2 controls: the nonenzyme treated deactivated treated. Films with both...
To design a new system of novel TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TOCNs)/graphene oxide (GO) composite, 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical (TEMPO)-mediated oxidation was utilized. For the better dispersion GO into matrix nanofibrillated (NFC), unique process combining high-intensity homogenization and ultrasonication adopted with varying degrees percent loadings (0.4 to 2.0 wt%). Despite presence carboxylate groups GO, X-ray diffraction test showed that crystallinity...
The behavior of protons in biopolymer films (BFs) formed with gelatin, water, and glycerol was investigated at various relative humidities (RHs) concentrations using a low field 1H NMR spectrometer. At RH approximately 0%, the distributed spin-spin relaxation times (T2) BFs showed two components: rapidly relaxing proton shortest T2 derived from rigid backbone gelatin polymer such as CH1-, CH2-, CH3-, slowly component longer functional groups amino acid residues -OH, -COOH, -NH3. These...
A simple biosensor with 1,1′-oxalyldiimidazole chemiluminescence (ODI-CL) detection capable of rapidly quantifying and screening alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in raw pasteurized milk was developed as an indicator for confirming whether commercial is properly pasteurized. Fluorescein formed when standards containing 1.0% different activities ALP samples were incubated fluorescein diphosphate (FDP) 15 min at room temperature. The relative CL intensity measured the addition 80 mM H2O2 ODI from...
A bio-based polyurethane and a thermosetting acrylic were tested in conjunction with nano-fibrillated cellulose conventional kraft fiber to evaluate their use as bio-derived, biodegradable packaging foam. Foams evaluated for density, water uptake, compressive creep behavior. Bio-based urethane had mean density of 68 kg/m3, uptake 4% 24 h, exceeded the 10% limit on strain when at 71 °C 22 °C, but remained below -54 °C. The 128 337% showed less than all three temperature conditions....
