An efficient and green method has been developed for the synthesis of tryptanthrin employing β-cyclodextrin as a catalyst in aqueous media at room temperature from isatoic anhydride isatin. An efficient new multicomponent protocol for the C-3 functionalization of indoles with dihydrocoumarin has been developed using an artificial sweetener (saccharin)-based functional ionic liquid (imidazolium saccharinate).
