Abstract Over the last few decades, control engineers have focused on developing innovative theories and algorithms to regulate systems. These efforts are usually at stage of a sequential strategy that allows engineering departments work independently consecutively toward design new products Control developed end process, once mechanical, electrical, other subsystems completely defined. This paper discusses different approach, named Co‐Design (CCD). Following concurrent considers...
Climate change poses an existential threat to humanity. It is now indisputable that the primary cause of this human activity resulting in high greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which began during Industrial Revolution and have continued rapidly accelerate. The first warnings impending irreversible climate were sounded decades ago, when governmental intergovernmental policy makers had sufficient time enact changes needed avoid dire situation we find ourselves today.
In contrast with conventional microgrids (MGs) fixed boundaries, a smart and flexible MG dynamic boundary is introduced in this paper. Such can dynamically change its by picking up or shedding load sections of distribution feeder depending on available power, leading to more operation, better utilization renewables, smaller size energy storage system, higher reliability, lower cost. To achieve MG, the main challenges design are addressed, including recloser placement, asset sizing...
This study addresses two major single‐input single‐output control problems involving both feedback and feedforward actions: (i) the model matching in reference tracking (ii) rejection of measurable disturbances. Its aim is to overcome limitations inversion‐based design methods when system uncertainty considered, find a engineering solution based on quantitative theory (QFT). The proposed methodology leads minimum cost by limiting action strictly necessary amount that enables use controller....
A fully populated matrix controller allows a designer considerably more design flexibility to govern multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) processes than the classic diagonal structure. methodology is presented extend quantitative feedback theory (QFT) for MIMO plants with model uncertainty design. Three cases are considered: (i) reference tracking; (ii) external disturbance rejection at plant input; and (iii) output. The role played by non-diagonal elements analysed in order state QFT....
Abstract This paper introduces a new Metric Space to guide the design of advanced wind energy systems and hydrokinetic converters such as tidal, ocean current riverine turbines. The can analyse farms that combine different or identical turbines stand‐alone first metric (M1) space considers efficiency in farm, which is also proportional specific power per swept area at given wind/water velocity (W/m 2 ). second (M2) describes rotor unit mass (m /kg). Both metrics depend on primary...
This article extends two recent contributions in the field of quantitative feedback theory to multivariable case. They concern model matching and measured disturbance rejection problems. The problem is a tracking control with specifications given as acceptable deviations from an ideal response. balances feedforward actions reject disturbances. Both perspectives present advantages over classical techniques certain situations. paper develops necessary tools solve both problems case multi-input...
This paper introduces a methodology to design automatically QFT (Quantitative Feedback Theory) robust controllers for SISO (single input-single output) plants with model uncertainty. The method generalizes previous automatic loop-shaping techniques, avoiding restrictive assumptions about the search space. applies two strategies: a) Evolutionary Algorithms, and b) Genetic Algorithms (GA). In both cases objective is controller that fulfils control specifications whole set of plant models...
Abstract The loop coupling reduction of multivariable systems under the presence plant uncertainty is currently a most discussed topic. Following ideas suggested by Horowitz, in this paper role played non‐diagonal controller elements analysed order to state design methodology. Thus, definition matrix and quality function come into use quantify amount interaction controllers, respectively. This yields criterion that makes possible propose sequential methodology fully populated controller,...
Abstract This paper presents a reformulation of the full‐matrix quantitative feedback theory (QFT) robust control methodology for multiple‐input–multiple‐output (MIMO) plants with uncertainty. The new includes generalization previous non‐diagonal MIMO QFT techniques; avoiding former hypotheses diagonal dominance; simplifying calculations off‐diagonal elements, and then method itself; reformulating classical matrix definition specifications by designing set loop‐by‐loop bounds on Nichols...
Autothermal Thermophilic Aerobic Digestion (ATAD technology) is a promising alternative to conventional digestion systems. Aeration key factor in the performance of these kinds reactors, relation effluent quality and operating costs. At present, realisation automatic control ATADs its infancy. Additionally, lack robust sensors also makes processes difficult: only redox potential temperature are reliable for operation full-scale plants. Based as it on existing simulation protocols...
This paper deals with the design of robust control strategies to govern position and attitude a Darwin-type spacecraft large flexible appendages. The satellite is one flyers multiple constellation for future ESA mission. It presents 6×6 high order multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) model uncertainty loop interactions introduced by modes low-stiffness scientific objectives require very demanding specifications accuracy, disturbance rejection, loop-coupling attenuation, low controller...
This paper proposes a new method to regulate the output power of offshore wind farms in presence variable speed using Flywheel Energy Storage Systems (FESS). A novel configuration FESS-integrated farm is presented. hierarchical control structure was developed handle complexity FESS. Multi-Input Multi-Output Quantitative Feedback Theory (MIMO QFT) and Linearization were used designed controllers such that robust performance achieved nonlinearities. current coordinating algorithm extend...
The Green Bank Telescope is a 100-m aperture single-dish radio telescope. For high-frequency observations (above 100 GHz), it needs tracking error below 1.5 arc sec rms. present system has of 1 rms for very low wind speeds ≤1 m/s, which increases well above 4 m/s. Hence, improvements in the servo control are needed to achieve pointing accuracy goals observations. As first step toward this goal, necessary evaluate dynamic response and telescope, forms large flexible structure. We derive model...
