Compared male students, females underperform on and high-stakes Gaokao, relative their performance low-stakes mock examination. Moreover, women's suffers more than men's negative shocks an earlier exam same day. These effects are pronounced for subgroups of students where stakes matter more. Overall, these findings appear be best explained by lower tolerance weaker...
This paper investigates the effect of work interruption on workers’ subsequent productivity. We employ a data set individual productivity and machine conditions, in which each worker faces chance, daily basis, that her will break down randomly. This paper investigates attitude towards partial ambiguity. In a laboratory setting, we study three symmetric variants of the ambiguous urn in Ellsberg's 2-urn paradox by varying possible compositions red and black cards 100-card deck. Subjects value betting on deck with smaller set more, even when they share same end points. The valuation lotteries only two decreases degree spread except for reversal it approaches extreme case either all or black. We further skewed ambiguity find that...
Using data on more than 250,000 emergency department (ED) visits, we study the time-of-day effect physician decision-making and patient outcomes. After controlling for characteristics, fixed effects, work hours, find that cases treated at night have significantly lower probability of inpatient admission involve fewer medical tests. These are also likely to revisit ED, which supports decline in performance. While cannot completely rule out possibility limited hospital arrangements, our...
